Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Team lead within our Acute Stroke team at Eastbourne District General Hospital.
As part of this role, you will manage a team of Occupational Therapists and support staff providing a high level of acute rehabilitation to patients admitted following an acute stroke.
As part of the Acute Stroke therapy department, you will be joining a large supportive team passionate about caring for the residents of East Sussex. You will have the opportunity to conduct in-service training programmes for support staff and manage a dedicated team on a day to day basis.

Main duties of the job
To co-ordinate and operationally manage the specialist
Occupational Therapy Service at the Acute Stroke Ward at
EDGH.
Working closely with Allied Health Professional Leads,
nursing, medical and managerial team leads / managers, in
the operational and strategic development of the Stroke Unit.
Supervision team of junior OT and OTA colleagues and support staff providing training and joint sessions as required.
Deliver a high standard of clinical care and maintain
service delivery by flexible, effective and efficient prioritisation
based on sound clinical and professional judgement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To co-ordinate and operationally manage the specialist
Occupational Therapy Service at the Acute Stroke Ward at
EDGH.
• To work closely with Allied Health Professional Leads,
nursing, medical and managerial team leads / managers, in
the operational and strategic development of the Stroke Unit.
• To support and deputise for the Stroke Therapy Service
Manager to complete any delegated duties.
• To work autonomously, being accountable for own
professional actions.
• To delegate work to and assist in the supervision of junior OT
FORM B1
colleagues and support staff providing training and joint
sessions as required.
• To be responsible for an identified complex caseload, to
assess, plan intervention and evaluate patient care within the
protocols, objectives and procedures of the service.
• To deliver a high standard of clinical care and maintain
service delivery by flexible, effective and efficient prioritisation
based on sound clinical and professional judgement.
• To use an extensive range of verbal and non-verbal
communication skills to engage effectively with clients and
their carers to gain consent and active participation in
treatment by developing a therapeutic relationship based on
trust and negotiation within the legal framework with those
clients who lack capacity to consent
• To ensure all staff and own verbal and non-verbal, written and
electronic client records, reports and activity data are
maintained, kept up-to-date and report back in appropriate
forums, in accordance with professional and Trust record
keeping standards.
• To forge close working relationships with colleagues within
acute, intermediate care and community stroke services and
support a seamless service within the stroke pathway.
• To advise on equipment and environmental modifications and
refer onto other organisations as required.
• To act as an Occupational Therapy resource for colleagues,
carers, and patients.
• To ensure the appropriate training, development and
appraisal of Occupational Therapy staff within the Acute
Stroke therapy department.
• To assist in the supervision and education of Occupational
Therapy students.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc or MCs in Occupational Therapy
- Evidence of a comprehensive record of continued professional development including attendance at specialist Acute Stroke course.
- Post graduate courses relevant to the clinical specialism
- Health professional council registration
Desirable criteria
- Leadership qualification / training
- Member of specialist Interest Group
- Evidence of postgraduate development to Masters level
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of working as an Occupational Therapist at band 6 or above
- Experience within Acute Stroke
- Experience of assessment, treating and discharging planning for patients with highly complex needs
- Experience of developing and appraising staff
- Experience of delivering services along with evidence based guidelines
Desirable criteria
- Three years experience within area of speciality
- Experience in leading and teaching programmes of education
- Previous experience as a band 7
- Experience of service development
- Experience of performance management
- ICES Pooled Budget management responsibility
Skills
Essential criteria
- Expert clinical skills and reasoning within area of speciality
- Expert written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to deal with complex family dynamics and distressing or sensitive situations e.g sudden onset of disability, care of the dying
- Full understanding of the national agenda for relevant clinical pathways
- Understanding of the strategic direction of East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust
- Ability to highlight development needs of self and staff and provide appropriate plan of action
- Able to operationally lead on the delivery of services within a high pressure service and during times of variable demand
