Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

The post holder will be perioperatively assessing and treating older patients undergoing surgery at the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne DGH.  This is an exciting new role for the organisation, recognising the valuable and unique contribution that occupational therapy can provide perioperatively for proactive therapy to enhance the patient experience and outcomes.  The post holder will have the opportunity to help establish and shape the OT service alongside nursing and medical teams.

Professional support and supervision will be provided by the Occupational Therapy Lead and Acute Therapies Service Manager.

To work in partnership with AHP Rehabilitation Consultant, ACP’s, Clinical Therapy Lead and Service Manager to continually review, develop and refine pathways of care; facilitating the delivery of a robust, innovative and expert service.  

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the provision and strategic development of the Perioperative Care of Older People Undergoing Surgery Team.

To hold a clinical caseload, provide specialist Occupational Therapy expertise in the assessment and treatment of surgical patients, develop specialist programmes of care and rehabilitation and write detailed reports as required. 

To lead and develop the Occupational Therapy service to meet National standards and guidelines and contribute within the multi-disciplinary team in the Perioperative Care of Older People Undergoing Surgery Team.

To be responsible for planning, initiating and leading specialist audits and service evaluations, making recommendations to influence service development and clinical planning.

To work in partnership with ACP’s, Clinical Therapy Leads and Service Manager to continually review, develop and refine pathways of care; facilitating the delivery of a robust, innovative and expert service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc or MSC in Occupational Therapy
  • Health Professions Council Registered
  • Comprehensive record of CPD
  • Evidence of postgraduate development to Masters Level or equivalent in practice
  • Evidence of audit
  • Evidence of post graduate training
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership qualification/ training
  • Member of specialist Interest Group (BAOT)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 3 years as a Band 6 Occupational Therapist or above
  • Experience within orthopaedics / medicine and surgery
  • Experience as student Practice Educator
  • Experience of developing and appraising staff
  • Delivering services along evidence based guidelines
  • Experience of clinical leadership skills
  • Experience in developing and providing education and training to others
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
