At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

To Work in the Portering  Department at Conquest Hospital on a alternating shift pattern.

Monday to Sunday 0800-1600 and 1430-0000  on a alternating shift pattern 

Will also be trained to work in the waste department to cover shifts as and when required 

A Hospital Porter needs to demonstrate:

A Hospital Porter will:

·      Have good communication skills.

·      Be able to work well with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

·      Act calmly and quickly in emergencies.

·      Be able to follow instructions.

·      Respect patient confidentiality.

·      Deal sensitively with patients and visitors who are anxious, distressed or very unwell.

·      Have a flexible attitude to work.

Main duties of the job

 

 

1.         Movement of patients, escort of patients and visitors.

 

2.         Mortuary duties

                      (a)          Bodies to be transported to the mortuary as required.

                      (b)          In the absence of the mortuary assistant to:

-  Arrange access to the mortuary for appropriate persons as directed.

-  It may be necessary to assist Ambulance crews and/or Contracted Funeral Director during admission.

 

3.         Deliveries

To provide a collection and delivery service as required for internal specimens, theatre/x-ray lists.

 

4.         Equipment, Furniture and Fittings

-          Patient related equipment to be clean and in good repair, defects to be reported to the Duty Team Leader.

-          Furniture and other equipment to be moved around the hospitals when and where required.

 

5.         Medical Gas

-          The delivery of empty/full cylinders as required. This will include manifold rooms and  associated piped gas systems.

-          To attend to or report any defects with the medical gas supply as required.

 

6.         Emergency Procedures

To attend the appropriate ward or department immediately with the appropriate equipment and assistance upon hearing the alarms for:

 

-          Cardiac arrest / Lucas Machine

-          Major incident, Hazchem and CBRN incidents

-          Traumas

-          Helicopter landing

-          Fire alarm

-          Patient Collapse

 Other Duties

-          To perform other duties as directed by the Portering Supervisor or Team Leaders appropriate to the role and responsibilities of a General Porter.

-          To be flexible within the drawn up and agreed rota and be prepared to cover as and when required to maintain hospital Portering services.

-          To carry out any other duties that is reasonable as requested.

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of good general education, including Maths and English
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of portering role / NVQ level 2

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous Portering experience
  • Previous experience of working as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Customer Service or relevant experience relating to NHS

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of general hospital environment
  • Ability to work on own initiative and unsupervised
  • Good communication skills both verbal and non-verbal
  • Ability to complete basic written reports
  • Ability to prioritise duties against set parameters
