Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

We are looking for Phlebotomists to join our busy Conquest Hospital Phlebotomy team.  This post will require some weekend and bank holiday working.  There is also a clinic in Bexhill which is run by the Conquest team. The post holder will work both sites as required.

As a team we provide a phlebotomy service to the hospital wards seven days a week, Conquest outpatient clinic weekdays only and a Bexhill CDC clinic Monday to Saturday. 

This is not a training post and a certificate in venepuncture or its equivalent is a minimum requirement for application.  The successful candidate will be required to complete a probationary period during which they will undertake a competency assessment supported by the team leader.

Main duties of the job

To collect blood samples from patients in accordance with venepuncture, infection control and laboratory policies and procedures.  This will include collecting samples within the hospital and the Phlebotomy Clinics at both Conquest and Bexhill CDC in order to achieve efficient and effective patient care and effective resource management within the hospital.

The post holder will be required to complete and pass an in-house venepuncture competency programme.  

The post holder will be required to be polite and diplomatic whilst speaking directly to medical staff or patients and provide advice solely on the process of obtaining samples within Phlebotomy.  They will take telephone bookings and enter details on the department’s computer when a receptionist is not available.  They must ensure that they do not give information to unauthorised persons and are aware of the Data Protection Act at all times.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good level of general education including English and Maths
  • Ability to pass the in-house competency-based phlebotomy training programme.
Desirable criteria
  • Hold a current Phlebotomy competence certificate.

Experience

  • Knowledge of and commitment to healthcare.
  • Relevant experience in a care or healthcare role.
