The Children’s Speech and Language Therapy team in Central (Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex) are seeking a therapist who is ready to build on their previous B5/6 experience in schools and Specialist Support Centres (SSC) and are eager to make a positive contribution to our hardworking, supportive and friendly team.
We have an exciting opportunity to work in a specialist support centre for speech and language needs providing assessment and therapy to the children who access the unit (0.3 wte). This job is currently dovetailed with sessions in the mainstream service (0.7 wte) creating a fantastic full-time job working with school aged children. The sessions in the SSC enable a therapist to provide specialist evidence based therapy and is a great setting for developing specialist clinical skills in DLD and speech sounds disorders.
Main duties of the job
You will work as part of a supportive and friendly team to:
- Assess children’s speech language and communication needs (SLCN) and the
functional impact of these - Advise families and settings on how they can help reduce this impact and
facilitate communication skills - Provide individual or group therapy, demonstrating to parents/carers and setting
staff how they can use strategies and techniques - Train parents/carers and setting staff so that they are empowered to identify and
manage their child’s needs. - Write Reports and Intervention Plans, sharing information and setting targets
with parents/carers and setting staff - Measure the success of your actions and report your outcomes through outcome
measures; - Maintain your clinical and professional development to be the best therapist you
can be and progress in your career - Be part of clinical networks to ensure practice is evidence based and current.

- Access, and provide, supervision
- Attend training and disseminate information
- Maintain a CPD log

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Our mainstream service works follows the Balanced System, offering universal, targeted and specialist services. Collaboration with our education colleagues is paramount to delivering a service that meets children’s Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), to that end we have a termly planning meeting with each school to discuss children and what is needed to meet their needs. We offer training to school staff and demonstration sessions for targeted interventions alongside an offer of blocks of therapy for children who need specialist support.
You will be committed to continuing your own professional development using the training opportunities within the Trust as well as relevant specialist external courses so that we can continue to deliver a high quality service to the children, young people and families we support.
You will value the opportunity to work in partnership with parents, colleagues and staff in education and social care settings to achieve the best outcomes for those in your care. You will welcome opportunities to share your knowledge and skills and promote the values of a balanced system approach to service delivery. As a therapist with two or three years’ experience you will be keen to work further develop your skills in your chosen specialist areas. You will work as part of a well[1]supported team and be able to contribute your well-developed skills to the efficient and safe running of your part of the service. You will be able to support students, Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and NQTs/Band 5s and demonstrate resilience and early Leadership skills. You will actively seek opportunities to further your knowledge and skills.

Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Qualification/MRCSL
- HCPC Registration

- Membership of RCSLT
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of independently managing a clinical caseload
- Working in partnership with parents, teachers and other carers/support workers
- Experience of working within a relevant specialist area and developing specialist packages of care.
- Inter-agency planning, consultation and working
- Experience of a range of caseload management and prioritisation systems
Skills and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Excellent interpersonal skills/oral & written communication
- Competent IT skills
- Well established knowledge of assessment tools relevant to client group
- Well established knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions relevant to client group.
