Specialist Occupational Therapist

Job overview

Working as part of a multidisciplinary service, the post holder will have responsibility for a clinical case load within Chailey Heritage Foundation, a non-maintained special school and residential unit that is co-located with Chailey Clinical Services.

 They will use their clinical skills to develop child and family centred approaches to treatment in order to address functional difficulties and barriers to participation. Areas of intervention may include, but are not limited to, postural management and seating, use of electronic assistive technology, upper limb function, activities of daily living and moving and handling. The post holder will also act as a resource, offering clinical advice for children, young people and families and professionals within and external to the trust. This will include provision of advice and individualised training to family members, carers and school staff.

The post holder will also provide occupational therapy support to designated specialist out-patient clinics held at Chailey Clinical Services. This will be done as part of our Band 6 Clinic Rotation programme which offers the opportunity for clinical skills development within Electronic Assistive Technology, Assistive Technology, Functional Vision and Movement Clinics.

 The post holder will also take part in audit and service development activities, evidence reviews and reflective practice sessions with support from senior members of the occupational therapy team. 

Main duties of the job

a)    To provide a clinical programme of therapy for the children and young people with complex physical disabilities, who attend Chailey Heritage Foundation School and Residential Services. This will be in line with Educational Health and Care Plan recommendations and in response to the individual health needs of the child or young person.

 

b)    To undertake specialist assessment and evaluation relevant to the development of functional and occupational performance skills in the areas self-care, play, use of assistive electronic technology and access to education; this will include the use of specialist standardized assessments and equipment when appropriate.

 

c)    To plan, implement and develop individual programmes and provide group therapy interventions.

 

d)    To contribute to multidisciplinary assessments, reports, intervention plans and goal setting.

 

e)    To plan, implement and develop individual and group therapy programmes. This will include the running of therapy groups with other professionals under the direction of senior therapists.

 

f)      To set, evaluate and reassess individualised treatment aims, utilising a wide range of therapeutic interventions, in order to formulate a specialised therapy programme or intervention.

 

g)    To maintain an accurate and evaluative clinical record, according to departmental and professional standards, and to supervise the records of less senior staff and students within the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

4. Main responsibilities

 

a)    To retain professional competence through continuing professional development, clinical supervision, reflection and learning activities.

 

b)    To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of clinical work, including the management of a designated clinical caseload with support from senior members of the team. This includes adherence to applicable legislation and professional standards.

 

c)    To effectively manage clinical risk within own caseload and working environment, seeking support from senior members of the team as required, and sharing information as appropriate with other professionals involved with delivery of the service in line with organizational guidance and policies.

 

 

h)    To ensure effective communication in all aspects of clinical care through appropriate attendance at meetings, liaison with clinical and education colleagues and completion of required clinical documentation and reports in line with service standards. 

i)      To take joint responsibility with the occupational therapy team for the administration and smooth running of the department.

 

d)    To provide accurate and timely reports and other client related correspondence directly related to the allocated caseload according to service standards and requirements of other agencies.

 

e)    To be aware of clinical governance issues and processes, participate in audit projects and be able to utilise a range of outcome measurements for evaluation of both individual interventions and wider OT and therapy service.

 

f)      Provision of effective clinical supervision, training and mentorship to students and/or junior members of staff.

 

 

Person specification

Qualifications and/or professional registration

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Occupational Therapy
  • Health and Care Professions Council registration
Desirable criteria
  • Member of BAOT
  • Member of relevant professional clinical interest group or body

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience of working with adults or children with multiple and complex disabilities

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Assessment and treatment planning skills using clinical observation and relevant standardised and non-standardised assessment tools
  • Ability to modify and adapt communication styles appropriately in response to family, children and young people’s needs in order to offer practical and emotional support.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to use Makaton signing to facilitate communication.

Qualifications and/or professional registration

Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of relevant postgraduate training, courses and/or qualification in the areas of postural management, assistive technology and neuro rehabilitation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years as a qualified therapist with a minimum of 1 years clinical experience in neurology and/or paediatrics.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering supervision to peers and junior members of staff
  • Experience of participation in research, audit and/or service development activities

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of neurological and orthopaedic conditions, including treatment approaches, interventions and use of specialist equipment
  • Knowledge of Educational Health and Care Plan framework and SEND processes
  • Ability to formulate treatment goals and carry out interventions using an occupational therapy framework – delivered autonomously and/or as part of a wider multi-disciplinary intervention
  • Excellent written, verbal, digital and interpersonal communication skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of electronic assistive technology and clinical application to children’s functional independence and learning in relation to powered mobility; use of computer programmes to access school curriculum and communication.

  • Established skills in the assessment and provision of specialist equipment including wheelchair seating, moving and handling and personal care equipment.
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the principles of postural management, including the theory underpinning clinical interventions and equipment provision.
