Job overview

Undertakes a range of cardiac diagnostic tests and procedures including specialist tests.  Interprets test results and provides accurate factual reports for clinicians. Is in training to perform cardiac ultrasound examinations and learns to produce a clinical report for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac abnormalities. Takes a lead role in Physiologist managed exercise testing. Provides clinical supervision and training for junior staff and other healthcare professionals. Participation in an out of hours on-call rota for emergency cardiac intervention may be required to meet the service need.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertakes a wide range of cardiac diagnostic tests, including specialist cardiac clinical physiological tests and procedures performed in a tertiary cardiac center.
  • Performs complex cardiac ultrasound examinations under direct supervision until deemed competent to be independent.
  • Produces complex, specialist clinical reports on cardiac ultrasound scans (echocardiograms) for all specialties for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac abnormalities when deemed competent.
  • Assists with invasive cardiac ultrasound examinations (Trans Oesophageal Echocardiogram).

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience as a cardiac physiologist including extensive experience of specialist area
  • Experience of supervision/training of junior staff and other healthcare professionals
  • Previous experience of staff supervision, including prioritising and allocating duties
Desirable criteria
  • Eligible for Registration with RCCP

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Cardiac Clinical Physiology Degree or equivalent level with appropriate experience
  • ASCT/MSCT or equivalent qualification

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a full range of diagnostic tests as detailed in the job description
  • Able to perform cardiac diagnostic tests unsupervised and produces a factual report
  • Able to interpret test results
  • Able to prioritise own work and that of junior staff
  • Capable of supervising and assisting with the training of trainee physiologists
  • Knowledge of national and local codes of practice/protocols
  • IT skills necessary for accurate documentation of tests and reports
