Job overview

Are you looking to progress your career and develop advanced clinical knowledge and leadership skills in a friendly and forward thinking department that offers great CPD opportunities?

We are looking for a therapist with advanced communication skills and clinical experience in working with adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders to join our team.

Our team works across Hull and East Yorkshire providing adult speech and language therapy across a number of community settings including community inpatient units, specialist multi disciplinary stroke services, community clinics and domiciliary visits. Our service sees clients with a range of conditions including neurological disorders, voice difficulties, stammering, frailty and respiratory conditions. 

You will be supported by both the SLT Team Lead and Operational Manager and have peer support from other band 7s within the service. Staff are supported in accessing external training and have been involved in research and service development projects. Staff are also provided with the necessary information technology to enable flexible and mobile working.

If you have specific clinical interests within our service area we would be interested in seeing if we can support these within your workload.

Main duties of the job

• Oversee a locality community caseload and waiting list of adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties and support the service lead in meeting service Key Performance Indicators.

• Undertake assessments and provide treatment plans for a range of acquired communication and swallowing difficulties including highly complex clients in both domiciliary and clinic settings.

• Input into our community Videofluoroscopy clinic with MBSimp training provided if not already undertaken

• Complete telephone assessments and provide highly specialist telephone support to patients, carers and care homes.

• Provide supervision to band 6 , 5 and 4 staff and SLT students as required.

• Lead on service development and audit projects within the service. We are fully committed to staff development and a robust supervision and appraisal framework in place.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current HCPC professional registration
  • Current RCSLT membership
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Postgraduate dysphagia qualifications and/or evidence of competence at the highly specialist level on the RCSLT dysphagia competencies
  • Educated to Masters Level or Masters level/ Post Graduate modules supplemented by specialist accredited training and experience in specialist field(s)
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of training to be a certified LSVT clinician
  • Advanced/expert clinical qualification
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full understanding of relevant policy, legislation, drivers and their application to clinical and service area
  • Full understanding/application of relevant clinical practice/standards/audit within identified clinical area
  • Advanced/expert understanding of relevant clinical practice, standards and protocols within identified clinical area.
  • Evidence of undertaking audits/surveys
  • Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Member of specialist interest group/network, regionally or nationally
  • Good working knowledge of relevant IT systems to own area of work

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of sound post-registration professional practice
  • Demonstrable experience of working in the specific field where the post is held
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the clinical area to advanced level e.g. Masters/post-graduate diploma and equivalent knowledge /experiential learning
  • Evidence of advanced practice skills and able to demonstrate the impact of this on practice change/development
  • Evidence of promoting/supporting active user/carer involvement/participation
  • Leadership/management experience which has had a positive impact and created change within the service delivery/practice
  • Professional networking regionally and nationally
  • Be able to effectively Chair meetings
Desirable criteria
  • A breadth of clinical practice including clinically specialising in the field where the post is held
  • Proven leadership/management experience, able to demonstrate examples of positive impact/change within service delivery/practice at an advanced/expert level
  • Ability to work across team/organisational boundaries developing and maintaining multi-professional and multi-agency partnerships
  • Experience of developing others through education, mentorship, coaching, teaching, assessing, presentations, publishing
