Job overview

This is a rare and exciting opportunity, enabling your development of Stroke Occupational Therapy specialist knowledge and skills, working in a rehabilitation unit and the community across Hull and East Riding. Hull, which was City of Culture 2017, has much to offer - with affordable housing, galleries, theatres, a vibrant music scene and easy road links to the Yorkshire Coast, Moors and Dales.

The Occupational Therapy team aims to maintain an innovative approach in meeting the growing needs of stroke survivors who are often of working age. supporting them to regain independence in meaningful and valued roles and routines such as personal care, functional mobility, return to work and community access.

The service strives to keep up to date with developments in stroke rehabilitation and collectively continues to develop specialist knowledge and application in numerous areas such as specialist seating, positioning, upper limb therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, fatigue management and adjustment following stroke. 

Main duties of the job

Following on from the success of previous successful group therapy innovations, the service is particularly motivated to further develop the offer of group therapy education and therapeutic groups to collectively meet the individual needs of stroke survivors. Previous innovations have included horticultural therapy, creative music making and mindfulness-based interventions. Mentorship and supervision are provided by the senior staff within a friendly, multidisciplinary, supportive environment.

The ability to commute within the Trusts geographical area with access to the appropriate means of transport is essential.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Current HCPC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience as a Practice Educator of preregistration students
  • Evidence of current CPD/formal qualifications at an advanced level e.g. degree or post graduate level or equivalent knowledge/experiential learning

Knowledge/Experience

Essential criteria
  • A broad understanding of relevant policy, legislation drivers and their application to clinical and service area, e.g. Mental Capacity Act, Social Inclusion
  • Knowledge of Occupational Therapy models of practice, standardised assessments and their use
  • Basic IT skills
  • Willingness to undertake and complete preceptorship
  • Appropriate knowledge/experience of working in community and adult physical health clinical practice areas
  • Understanding of caseload management and responsibilities
  • Conversant in the 7 C’s – Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, Commitment and Candour and the values of the organisation
  • Able to demonstrate effective inter-personal/communication skills
  • Evidence of good time management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Full understanding of relevant policy, drivers and their application to clinical and service area, e.g. NSF, Social Inclusion
  • Full understanding/application of relevant clinical practice/standards/audit within identified clinical area
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the clinical area
  • Evidence of specialist practice skills and able to demonstrate the impact of this on practice change/development
  • Evidence of promoting/supporting active user involvement and participation
