Job overview
Applications are invited for the position of Consultant General Anaesthetist with special interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia.
The Department provides Anaesthesia services for all major surgical specialties and works across two sites. Most elective work takes place at Castle Hill Hospital whilst urgent care, obstetric and paediatric care is at Hull Royal Infirmary.
The Women’s and Children’s hospital manages about 4600 deliveries per year, with an elective caesarean section rate of 20% and an emergency caesarean section rate of 25%. For many years, Hull has been a leading centre for the practice and teaching of obstetric anaesthesia. There are active research and audit programs and opportunities for innovation in clinical practice.
Main duties of the job
The post will provide input into obstetric anaesthesia on-call rota 1:10 at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
A standard full time Job Plan will contain 10 programmed activities (PAs) comprising 7.5 PAs for direct
clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 for supporting activities (SPAs) 1 PA is for on-call. 1.5 SPAs are classed as
‘core’ and cover time for training, teaching, CPD, audit, appraisal, clinical governance and attendance at
service meetings. There are opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS
medical school curriculum. Additional SPA time can be allocated for research, clinical management and
educational supervisor (ES) activity.

Professional Registration
Essential criteria
- Full Registration with the GMC
- GMC Specialist Registration (or expected inclusion within 6 months)
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Registered Practitioner who possesses FRCA (or equivalent). Either on the specialist register or if currently in a specialist registrar post, he/she is eligible to be registered within 6 months
- Must have completed Advanced Training in Obstetric Anaesthesia
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate degree: e.g. MD, PhD
- Postgraduate qualification in Education or significant experience in post graduate training
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of training and clinical experience and competence in all anaesthetic techniques. Must have experience in management of High risk Obstetric patients
- Must have worked in the UK for at least 12 months as an anaesthetist
- ALS Provider
Desirable criteria
- Proficiency in use of Ultrasound for regional anaesthesia
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria
- Understanding of current issues in the NHS, and of the responsibilities of a NHS consultant.
Desirable criteria
- Attendance at recognised management courses.
Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Experience in training and teaching postgraduate and doctors and medical students in small and large groups.
- Ability to carry out medical research. Ability to present the findings of their research at a relevant scientific meeting.
Desirable criteria
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
- Trained in assessment of junior doctors
- A commitment to continuing research.
- Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
