Job overview

Here is a link to a video abut the role: https://vimeo.com/902178253

This is a fixed term appointment for 12 months, designed to support the delivery of undergraduate medical education teaching. Clinical Teaching Fellows work within a multidisciplinary team to create and deliver teaching within the clinical setting to students of the Hull York Medical School. This includes MBBS students, widening access ‘Gateway’ students and Physician Associate MSc students.

This post is suitable for motivated individuals who have an interest in developing specialist teaching skills and portfolios, and whose careers would be advanced by the role. This might be of interest to registered practitioners after completion of foundation training, including those who are studying for a higher qualification, writing up research, applying for higher specialist training rotations, or any combination of these. It may also appeal to higher trainees who wish to take time out of a training programme, subject to the approval of the appropriate Specialist Training Committee.

Main duties of the job

·   Preparation and review of teaching activities for HYMS MBBS and Physician Associate Students

·       Teaching commitments which may include:

o   Ward-based bedside teaching

o   Simulation (including high fidelity 3G, virtual reality, digital table, and 3D anatomy)

o   Small group classroom/seminar teaching

o   Clinical and procedural skills (e.g. suturing, fundoscopy, and otoscopy)

·        Act as Educational Supervisor to HYMS Physician Associate Students

·  Contribute to the continuous improvement of development of HYMS curricula and delivery

·       Examine in formative and summative assessments (e.g. OSCEs, OSLERs)

·       Provide pastoral support where required

Working for our organisation

The Humber Health Partnership is one of the largest acute and community Partnership arrangements in the NHS, seeing well over one million patients every year and managing a budget of over £1.3 billion.

Made up of two Trusts - Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH) - our Partnership has significant ambitions and is committed to delivering world-class hospital and community services for the 1.65 million people we serve.

Together we employ nearly 20,000 staff. Our five main hospital sites are Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Goole and District Hospital, for NLAG and Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital for HUTH.

As Teaching Hospitals working with the Hull York Medical School, we both lead and contribute to research in many areas - biomedical research, primary care, palliative medicine, cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, vascular surgery, cancer surgery and oncology.

We believe that by developing a diverse, inclusive, innovative, skilled and caring workforce, we can deliver excellent care to our patients and a great future for our employees, our Partnership and our community.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

See attached job description and person specification for further information.

We encourage post holders to include a fixed clinical shift as part of their working week, which we would help to organise. Typically, this is a 4:1 teaching to clinical split each week, although this is flexible subject to contracted hours. The clinical shift may be in a variety of medical or surgical departments, allowing for the development of clinical skills and knowledge and will be in the same area for the duration of the contract. Clinical roles previously held by Clinical Teaching Fellows include posts in the Acute Medical Unit, Emergency Department, Infectious Diseases, Paediatrics, and Cardiology, with scope to help arrange regular clinical shifts in other departments.

In order to support your continued professional development, the Trust encourages participation in postgraduate courses in Health Professions Education, starting at the level of a postgraduate certificate, with scope to progress to a diploma and master’s degree. The department provides an educational study budget of £500 (pro-rata) that may be used to support this. Post holders may be entitled to a 20% fee reduction when undertaking these courses through the Hull York Medical School.

Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to teaching of the MBBS, Gateway, and Physician Associate Curricula within the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. It is expected that a Clinical Teaching Fellow will commit a minimum of 6 sessions per week teaching on a typical 4:1 contract.
