Job overview

A vacancy for a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Assistant with a bias for Mechanical work has arisen within the Estates Maintenance Department at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The post is based at Castle Hill Hospital but they may be required to work at all Trust property so the applicant is required to hold a full driving license to undertake driving duties.

Please note that this advertised vacancy does not meet the UKVI eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa and therefore HUTH would not be able to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for this role.

Main duties of the job

The main job purpose of the role is to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to carry out basic repairs and planned maintenance tasks throughout the Hospital and other premises.

The vacancy requires participation on a partial shift system Rota and the successful candidate will be required to provide sickness and annual leave cover for the various sections and stores duties.

The successful candidate will have relevant technical qualifications or equivalent experience and must be able to demonstrate experience of maintenance activities including Portable Electrical Appliance Testing and/or Steam Boiler operation and maintenance. However, the department is committed to the ongoing training of their staff to a high standard in order to comply with legislation and to ensure that the patient environment is maintained so as to be safe but in a cost effective and efficient manner.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 ‘Engineering Practice’ or be experienced in the base level of theoretical knowledge and procedures for carrying out repair work on Building / Mechanical/ Electrical plant and Equipment or have City and Guilds Certificate 2377 parts 1 & 2 for in-service testing of Electrical Equipment. (Equivalent NVQ level 3) And BTEC/City & Guilds accredited Boiler Operators Scheme Certificate (BOAS)
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ3/CIPS Foundation stage or equivalent practical and theoretical experience of receipt process, stock control, ordering and invoicing procedures. IFEDA accreditation certificate for fire appliance inspection and servicing, Alternative British Fire consortium certificate of training to BSI -QSP94001

Knowledge, Training & Experien

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience in Electrical/Mechanical/Building maintenance including Portable Electrical Appliance Testing, Fire Appliance maintenance and Steam Boiler operation and maintenance. Awareness of Safe Working Procedures and Health & Safety Policy requirements.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous hospital maintenance experience, Water treatment regime maintenance, Knowledge of Heating and ventilation plant maintenance.

Communication and Interpersona

Essential criteria
  • Communicate well with other members of staff at all levels and contractors. Ability to work as part of a team or independently without direct supervision. Organise own day to day activity, Good understanding of Engineering principles to carry out specified base level tradesman’s maintenance tasks.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Policy and Safe Working Procedures.

Essential criteria
  • Able to understand and clarify detailed instructions, have good judgement skills to fulfil job responsibilities. Be able to problem solve on faulty equipment, interpret maintenance and operations manuals, and establish best solutions. Highly developed physical skills, accuracy important, and manipulation of fine tools and equipment.
Desirable criteria
  • Erecting lightweight scaffolding training. Working in confined space training. Relevant Health & Safety training including Lifting & Handling. Asbestos Awareness training. Confined Space working. Infection Control Awareness Training. Resuscitation/First Aid Training.

Other Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Hold a full valid driving licence. Must be willing to participate in a partial shift system. Must be willing to work at all hospital sites within the Trust. Willing to participate in training.
Desirable criteria
  • Computer Keyboard skills. Stores/stock control experiences an advantage.
