Job overview

We are looking for a motivated Band 6 Adult Community Speech and Language Therapist to join our small team, which continues to experience development. We are therefore looking for a forward thinking, passionate individual.

The successful candidate will be interested in providing excellent patient care, whilst helping develop our service further and will be passionate about community working.

 Our service provides assessment, advice, therapy and education for those with acquired communication and swallowing disorders. We offer appointments by home visit, telephone, and video as well as outpatient clinics. Our caseload includes neurological degenerative conditions, stroke services, care homes and two community hospitals.

We cover Scarborough, Filey, Ryedale, Pocklington and Whitby and work alongside other community therapy and nursing services. We are looking for an individual to cover a clinical caseload in Scarborough, Ryedale or Whitby. The work base location and split of geographical caseload will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate.

The option of bases is Scarborough Prospect Road YO12 7LB, Whitby Hospital YO21 1DP or Malton Hospital YO17 7NG.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will include - 

  • To provide life-changing treatment, support and care for adults who have difficulties with communication, eating, drinking and swallowing. You'll help people who, for physical or psychological reasons, have problems speaking and communicating.
  • To provide a high quality, comprehensive service in line with the guidance of the Humber NHS Foundation Trust, the Health and Care Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. The paramount concern being the well-being of clients
  • To continue to demonstrate specialist clinical skills in practice and provide support and advice re the delivery of care in partnership with patients, relatives, staff, managers, and externally with other agencies

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Current registration with HCPC and RCSLT
  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree, short specialist courses (e.g.Post Graduate module in dysphagia ) plus equivalent knowledge and experience in specialist field e.g adults with acquired conditions and evidence of CPD
  • Full understanding of relevant policy, legislation and guidance relevant to clinical and service area
  • Evidence of undertaking audits/surveys
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership qualification/equivalent experience if required
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent presentation skills/training experience
  • Recent experience as a supervisor and placement educator

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of sound post-registration professional practice
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) at a specialist level of care
  • Experience of multi-agency/professional working
  • Experience of case load management within specialist service area
  • Evidence of promoting/supporting active patient/relative involvement/participation

  • Effective inter-personal skills and experience in supervising and mentoring
  • Able to demonstrate effective communication skills and work flexibly within the team/service
