Are you interested in helping us to develop our prison mental health teams?

We have a permanent band 8b, full-time position, within our HMP Pathway Services, based at HMP Full Sutton or HMP Millsike.   This work will be in partnership with providers including Tees Esk & Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust and Rethink, supporting prisoners’ mental health and well-being. 

You will have an opportunity spend a proportion of your time at the Humber centre to ensure you receive high quality supervision and training from the Lead and Consultant Psychologist of the forensic division. 

Candidates will be required to work flexibly within the HMP Partner sites as required, including HMP Hull and Humber.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the provision of a high-quality psychological service. There is an emphasis on support and close multi-disciplinary team working. Our approach is compassionate with a focus on embedding trauma informed care.

 Reflective practice and creative approaches are highly valued. There will also be opportunities to lead on service wide projects to contribute significantly to improving the quality of the psychological services that we provide.

Applicants should have a strong sense of responsibility and leadership skills as the psychology representative within our prison mental health services.

In summary the role will involve:

  • Delivery of specialist psychological assessment, formulation, and interventions within a prison mental health team
  • Provision of psychological advice and consultation on service users mental health care
  • Lead on service and research developments

Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in psychology
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Full understanding of relevant policy, legislation, drivers and their application to clinical and service area, e.g. Mental Capacity Act, Social Inclusion
  • Full understanding/application of relevant clinical practice/standards/audit within identified clinical area
  • Knowledge of and experience in the use of a wide range of psychometric and other objective assessment tools, such as is used in neuro-assessment, as applied in clinical area
  • Skills in co-ordinating programmes of care, and providing consultation and specialist advice to other professional and non-professional groups

  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
  • Leadership or management qualification
  • Broadly based knowledge of the theory and practice of advanced psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnosis, people with disabilities etc.)

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of working as a practitioner psychologist, to include a significant period of working at a senior level in the specific specialist field where the post is held
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the clinical area.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups , across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for service users’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
  • Evidence of promoting/supporting active service user/carer involvement/participation

  • A breadth of clinical practice including clinically specialising in the field where the post is held
  • Proven leadership/management experience, able to demonstrate examples of positive impact/change within service delivery/practice at an advanced level
  • Ability to work across team/organisational boundaries developing and maintaining multi-professional and multi-agency partnerships
  • Experience of developing others through education, mentorship, coaching, teaching, assessing, presentations, publishing

  • Working knowledge of Trust policies and procedures in order to effectively lead and manage others

  • Ability to commute between the various sites
  • Evidence of resiliency when working with challenging client groups
