We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our pathology team as a Patient Pathway Co-ordinator/Medical Secretary.

Cellular Pathology is a collaborative and inclusive team based at Basildon Hospital. Working in an exciting, fast paced and interesting department alongside Histopatholgist consultants and biomedical scientists, supporting patients through their diagnostic pathway.

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our hardworking and friendly team.  Previous Medical secretary experience is ideal.

We have two PPC / Medical secretary positions available, one full time and one part time (latter part of the week).

Main duties of the job

Typing of Histology, non-gynae and postmortem reports both handwritten and digitally dictated.

Supporting the consultants and wider teams with the co-ordination of MDTs, general correspondence and referrals to specialist areas.

Co-ordinate, monitor and initiate appropriate changes within administrative processes along the patient pathway to ensure the patient’s journey is managed efficiently, smoothly and in accordance with targets and agreed timescales.

Utilise computerised tracking systems to progress patients through the cancer pathways and chase investigation results.

Liaise with teams outside of the department where appropriate to ensure a seamless patient journey through the histology process.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Working as part of a large administrative team to provide comprehensive  support to the Consultant Histopathologists and wider clinical team along with technical staff within the department.

Undertake the typing of all reports, correspondence and composing of letters and other documentation as required ensuring the patients journey is processed in a timely efficient manner in line with Cancer waiting times targets.

Ensuring robust systems are used to record any material sent or received in the department.

To co-ordinate regular MDT meetings, organising slides and reports , liaising with referral centres and other Trusts where necessary.

Support the office manager, Pathology Operational Manager and other Divisional managers in ensuring the speciality are able to deliver a safe and effective service.

Provide cross-cover for other Patient Pathway Co-ordinators to ensure a consistent and effective administration service is maintained at all times.

Supervise and support junior and fellow administrative members of the team and Assistants within the relevant specialties as advised by the office manager, including general monitoring of performance and compliance with Trust, Divisional and Speciality standards.

Excellent telephone communication skills when dealing with patients, staff and colleagues.
