 You will Lead, manage and develop the delivery and evaluation of consistently high-quality clinical pharmacy and medicines optimisation services to Critical Care and Vascular specialties, ensuring a high level of clinical effectiveness.

Main duties of the job

  • Manage and develop the roles of all clinical pharmacy staff to meet the needs of the present and future service and promote clinical excellence.
  • Manage and develop all aspects of medicines management, risk management and clinical governance. To ensure working with teams across all hospital sites to achieve CIP’s set with critical care and vascular departments and finance team.
  • Develop and maintain highly specialist knowledge in medicines used within critical care and vascular fields. To act as a role model and national expert in the critical care Pharmacy field and ensure a consistently high pharmacy service for the Directorates in line with corporate objectives and NHS targets.
  • To provide a framework for the safe, efficient and cost-effective use of medicine resources within Critical care and Vascular specialties, by provision of education and training, procedures, policies, guidelines, and effective control of drug expenditure across the two specialties.
  • To provide advice to patients and healthcare professionals on medication issues to achieve the best outcomes for the Patient and Health Service.
  • Take part in the provision of general clinical, dispensary and pharmacy services

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To lead,  strategically co-ordinate and evaluate a comprehensive clinical Pharmacy service to the Critical Care & Vascular directorates in accordance with the priorities identified by the post holder considering priorities set by the trust’s senior management team, pharmacy management team, clinical directorate leads, the ICS and national directives.
  • To ensure safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use of medicines in these patients.
  • Demonstrate professional accountability to enhance patient care and ensure all clinical pharmacy staff adhere to the same principles.
  • Lead on the development and implementation of the clinical pharmacy and medicines optimisation strategies.
  • Lead in delivery of formulary management including NICE TA’s and the management and reporting of high-cost drug use. Including use of BlueTeq. Biologics, Individual Funding Requests and IV Immunoglobulins within your specialties.
  • Clinical pharmacy lead for Metavision.
  •  Attend hospital committee and focus groups relevant to area of specialty.
  • Lead in the management of unlicensed medicines for your specialties.
  • Lead in the clinical training/liaison to outpatient partner. 
  • Ensure the development and implementation of new protocols and procedures is undertaken in a timely and appropriately prioritized manner.
  • Lead on the development of and ensuring adherence to evidence based prescribing guidelines. 
  • Lead on the development of research and audit projects.
  • Lead on the development of extending roles of pharmacy staff to enhance patient care.
  • Provide advice on high cost/high risk drugs (e.g., shared care or red traffic light drugs) to facilitate the seamless transition of patient care across the interface.
  • Share expertise with healthcare professionals on a nationwide level through professional conferences, forums, and bodies. 
  • Attend and be an active participant in relevant clinical and managerial groups within the trust and externally, to ensure the delivery of best care to patients. This may include presenting data/guidelines that may be controversial/likely to be challenged. 
  • To represent pharmacy and act as a link person at relevant meetings and conferences and disseminate knowledge of developments to other staff. 
  • Lead on medicines use initiatives that contribute to the Trust and pharmacy cost improvement programme. 
  • Support the production and implementation of business plans for the development of the pharmacy services.
  • Lead on the formulation, prioritization, and implementation of long-term strategic plans for Critical Care and Vascular pharmacy services, in line with local, network and national objectives. 
  • Lead on ensuring compliance with CQC medicine related outcomes, NICE appraisals, and other NHS related documents.
  • To attend Multidisciplinary meetings within the Critical Care and Vascular directorates and provide monitoring reports on clinical services and medicines use (clinical best practice and cost) as required.
  • To identify those patients who require increased liaison regarding discharge planning issues and to liaise with other Pharmacists within the Trust, members of the multidisciplinary team and with Tertiary / Secondary Care / Primary Care.
  • To deliver the Clinical and Financial Governance agenda in relation to drug use in Critical Care and Vascular specialties.

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Master’s degree in pharmacy
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Relevant post registration experience in hospital with proven experience as a lead specialist clinical pharmacist
Desirable criteria
  • Post grad qualifications in management
  • Project/Practice research
  • Undertaking incident investigation at trust level
