Job overview

The Day Surgery Service & Main Theatre Service are now managed into one team. The service has two sites delivering care at Basildon & Orsett Hospitals. The Trust has a busy inpatient block comprising of 7 Theatres, 5 Day Stay Unit Theatres as well as 2 Maternity Theatres and ECT suite, supporting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week activity profile, with all disciplines other than neurology carried out at Basildon Hospital.

 

The Day Surgery Service is completely nurse led when working in areas such as pre-assessment and discharge. It caters for adult, paediatric and special needs patients, and has overnight facilities, the Orsett site functions as a stand-alone unit (there are no inpatient facilities on-site). Patients having surgery in the main operating theatres are cared for within the service, as are patients transferred from A&E and other areas of the hospital. Inpatients can be cared for prior to transfer to an inpatient ward when there is need.

Main duties of the job

  • Following successful completion of development programme undertake the full range of duties appropriate to their work allocation without supervision.
  • Work as part of theatre team to scrub and circulate for surgical procedures.
  • Develop and maintain excellent theatre organisational skills.
  • Take part in rotation through all areas of the departments and across both sites to meet the needs of the service on a 24 hour basis.
  • Work within the multidisciplinary team ensuring good professional relationships.
  • Work competently in a variety of specialities for both paediatric and adult patients
  • Practice in accordance with the NMC / HCPC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies and procedures, and within your scope of practice.
  • Be an effective team member
  • Promote interdisciplinary working, with outcomes aimed at the best interests of patients and cohesive service delivery
  • Train junior staff and take part in the orientation of new staff following appropriate training.
  • Participate in clinical supervision/appraisals/audits
  • Take every opportunity to sustain and improve own knowledge and professional competence, reporting to senior staff any deficits that impinge on practice in a timely fashion whilst meeting the needs of the service
