Speech & Language Therapist

A rotational Band 5 position as a Speech and Language Therapist working with acquired disorders of communication and swallowing in adults.  The rotations cover different clinical areas of  Acute General Wards, Acute Stroke, Early Supported Discharge Service for Stroke and general Community caseload.  It is accountable to the Clinical Manager, Adult Speech & Language Therapy.

This position is suitable for newly qualified SLTs as their first post or those with some experience wishing to move into Adult work for the first time.  This an exciting time to join the team as we are working with our partners to transform Community services across the mid and south Essex area.

      Summary of the key responsibilities:

  • providing a Speech and Language Therapy service to adults with acquired disorders of communication and swallowing
  • undertaking diagnosis, assessment and treatment of patients with a range of speech, voice, communication and swallowing disorders.
  • liaising and offering advice as appropriate to a wide range of professionals
  • responsible for the daily organisation of sessions.
  • demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills.
  • The post holder must have undertaken, or be prepared to undertake, post graduate training to work with disorders of dysphagia
  • The post holder must hold a 1st degree level qualification or equivalent and be registered with HCPC and should be a member of RCSLT.
  • currently a rotational post working across all teams within the service - a minimum 6 months in each. This necessitates a change in location and/or work setting e.g. in the Acute or Community Hospitals/people’s own home, depending on the particular rotation

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Registered member of Health & Care Professions Council – Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist
  • Knowledge and adherence to local and national clinical guidelines

  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Network

Work related knowledge & experience

  • Relevant clinical experience including undergraduate clinical placements and/or work experience. Experience for example within community clinics settings/ acute ward settings/ speech and language disorder/ acquired communication/ swallowing disorders
  • Knowledge of assessment tools
  • Knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions
  • Knowledge of national policies and procedures

Skills & aptitudes

  • Frequent and intense use of auditory discrimination, perceptual and concentration skills for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of clients
