Job overview

An opportunity is available for an Occupational Therapist to join our innovative team at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust, based in Harlow, Essex. We provide ongoing care to a broad range of patients, ranging from those who are critically unwell, to those who need minimal rehabilitation or assessment and advice.

You will be responsible for providing a high standard of assessment, advice, treatment and evaluation of patients referred to the acute Inpatient Occupational Therapy Service, including patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions.

In return, you will be supported in your efforts to build on your previous experience to further develop your clinical competencies and leadership skills.

Current rotations are 9 months within:

  • Acute Medicine
  • Critical Care and Surgery
  • Oncology and End of Life care
  • Orthopaedics
  • A&E, short stay wards and Frailty
  • Community rotations with our partners EPUT and Essex County Council

Rotations and place of work may change according to the evolving nature of the integrated pathways across acute and community teams. A flexible and adaptable approach will be necessary to ensure delivery of an excellent OT service across all pathways.

This is a full time position. We will consider job shares and flexible working requests.

Main duties of the job

To have a major role in the advanced Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment of patients within the speciality who may have acute, complex and/or chronic presentations, provide functional assessment and deliver individualised treatment plans aimed at reducing the impact of disability and ill health.

To undertake a leading role in planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the Occupational Therapy service provided to inpatients on many wards, by the medical/surgical team on a daily basis.

To deputise where necessary for team lead Occupational Therapist.  Responsible for the clinical development of the service within the speciality, and provide day to day management of more junior staff, including Band 5 Occupational Therapists and assistants.

To work with community teams, for onward referral for patients being discharged home, to facilitate a safe and timely discharge.
