Job overview
A unique and exciting opportunity has become available to join the organisation as the lead nurse for people with learning disability and autistic people. You will be an experienced learning disabilities nurse who will lead our dedicated team in providing care across the organisation. You will be visionary, patient centred and have a deep empathetic understanding of the challenges and the complexities that people with learning disabilities and autistic people face navigating through healthcare and a hospital environment.
You will be responsible for improving the quality of care received by people with a learning disability and autistic people, within our organisation. You will be a role model and clinical expert nursing of people with a learning disability and those on the autism spectrum, across all areas of the Trust, supporting clinical staff in the management of care planning for patients.
Excellent leadership skills, effective organisational skills, highly developed communication skills and the ability to interact with people from a wide variety of professional backgrounds are essential. As a key member of our leadership team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the care and experience of people with learning disabilities and autistic people within our Trust.
Main duties of the job
You will be a specialist clinical resource providing specialist information to patients, families, carers, staff and community partners. You will identify, plan and facilitate initiatives to improve the patient experience and identify training opportunities (through training needs analysis) which will be delivered across the organisation.
Key priorities will be to:
• Deliver the Trust’s strategies to improve the quality of care received by individuals with a learning disability and/or autistic people in the acute hospital setting.
• Manage the interface between acute hospital services, primary care services and community specialist learning disability services.
• Facilitate reasonable adjustments within an acute setting for people with learning disabilities and/or autistic people.
• Develop effective and collaborative working with healthcare and multi-agency colleagues, including identifying and meeting the training needs and providing specialist advice.

We employ 3,500 staff and serve a local population of around 350,000 people living in west Essex and east Hertfordshire, centred on the M11 corridor and the towns of Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford and Epping. Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000 and includes the areas of Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.

Person specification
Education
Essential criteria
- Current entry on NMC register – learning disabilities
- Education to degree level or working towards
- Practice assessor/educator experience (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- Educated to master’s level, undertaking masters level course or has a willingness to do so (or equivalent)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post registration experience
- Experience of taking charge of a service or department
- Understanding of professional and current issues in nursing learning disabilities in acute areas
- Understanding of the wider NHS and local agendas that have an impact on the learning disabilities
- Proficient knowledge of safeguarding vulnerable adults’ procedures and mental capacity Act
Desirable criteria
- Experience of leading and managing a team of multi professional staff including management of conflict, absence etc
