Job overview

Hello my name is Giuseppe Labriola, and I am the Deputy Chief Nurse at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.  This is a role that I am enormously proud to hold and an organisation I am enormously proud to work in. 

I am now looking to build our corporate nursing team and as such I am excited to recruit to this key role of Head of Professional Practice for the organisation, to join me, and my existing team.

We have a well established education team with an ambitious strategy in development to bring together pre and post education, professional practice, workforce safeguards and recruitment/retention into a single team led by this role. 

Main duties of the job

 I am looking for an exceptional, inspirational, dynamic and highly experienced senior healthcare registered professional whose role is key to support the  organisation in the interpretation of local and national policy, c commissioning and regulatory strategy and standards.   This will include working across the Integrated Care System, East of England region and nationally.

You will have an in-depth expert knowledge in quality improvement, clinical/and or system transformation and assurance. You will be required to negotiate, problem solve, think strategically and be able to build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) provides a full range of general acute, outpatient and diagnostic services at The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, the Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishop’s Stortford, and St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping. 

We employ 3,500 staff and serve a local population of around 350,000 people living in west Essex and east Hertfordshire, centred on the M11 corridor and the towns of Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford and Epping. Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000 and includes the areas of Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse, midwife or non-medical registrant (HCPC, GPC, NMC)
  • MSc or demonstrable relevant experience or willingness to do so
  • Leadership or management qualification or significant experience
  • Practice assessor/educator experience
  • Teaching/education qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Counselling Qualification
  • Professional Nurse or Midwifery Advocate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience or operating in a leadership/senior clinical role
  • Evidence of working at a senior management level with external agencies; ability to work inter professionally and across professional boundaries
  • Professional portfolio demonstrating evidence of relevant on-going professional development
  • Demonstrable track record in developing, implementing and monitoring strategies, policies & procedures.
  • Evidence of teaching and assessing skills, including design, co-ordination and evaluation of practice development programmes
  • Able to demonstrate contribution to changing practice
  • Ability to provide leadership for a specialist service with substantial experience of working with patients and staff a senior level
  • Excellent leadership skills / effective role model and able to demonstrate effective clinical leadership ability
  • Participation and contribution to local / regional / national forums

  • Ability to provide expert up to date advice, training and supervision to appropriate professionals
  • Experience of delivering clinical / safeguarding supervision

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of current and wider NHS issues and political influences
  • A good knowledge of the Trust and national nursing/AHP issues and the ability to relate them to practice
  • Demonstrable advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Practice/Workforce development and planning across the Trust and the wider national picture
  • Knowledge of pre and post reg career / academic development
  • Excellent written and presentational skills.
  • Ability to use ICT equipment for data collection, analysis and the production of reports
  • Experience and skills in chairing and contributing to multi agency meetings
  • Able to influence at all levels of the organisation and use specialist knowledge to effect change.
  • Awareness of current and wider NHS issues and political influences.
  • Experience of teaching and presenting to multi-disciplinary forums
  • Practical experience of audit implementation and review with the ability to maintain and present data relating to this area of service
Desirable criteria
  • In depth knowledge and awareness of the quality, safety and governance agenda
  • Sound understanding of the principles of safe, effective and equitable recruitment and retention of staff
