Job overview
At the Pharmacy Department at PAH, we are excited to announce the vacancy of Senior Dispensing Assistant based within our dispensary.
This position has been designed to support the running of the smooth running of the dispensary in the supply of medicines to patients throughout the hospital as well as supporting a varied team of friendly staff.
As a senior band 3, this is a developmental step for an experienced Pharmacy Support worker looking to build their skills and responsibilities in a supportive environment.
Main duties of the job
- To support the dispensary manager to provide an effective pharmacy service in the Dispensary.
- Work alongside pharmacy technicians to lead in the training of rotational and core staff in the dispensary
- Apply skills and knowledge to a range of activities concerned with the dispensing of prescribed items including controlled drugs.
- Be a part of the on-call rota to provide an out of hours service in the dispensary.
- Team lead to manage queries and workflow in the dispensary

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- To work with and support Dispensary Manager in the Pharmacy Dispensary to:
- Co-ordinate daily activities including ensuring compliance with the rota and escalating to the dispensary manager any issues
- Take a lead in ensuring the dispensary environment is maintained to a high standard
- Direct “team leading” the pharmacy dispensary
- Take a lead in training, guiding and supervising staff in their duties in the dispensary including rotational ATOs, dispensing assistants, Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technicians, Pre-Registration Pharmacists and locums.
- Deputise for the dispensary manager on a short term basis when required
- Identify, select and issue drugs including clinical trials and controlled drugs
- Be a part of the on-call rota to provide an out of hours service in the dispensary weekdays, weekends and bank holidays according to rotas
- Identify and receive drugs against an official order, using the Pharmacy Computer system to update stock levels.
- Carry out reception duties, involving dealing with patients, relatives and all grades of healthcare workers.
- Ensure adequate supplies and accurate stock control of all items required in the department
- Receiving out-patient prescriptions against set criteria
- Deal with telephone enquiries and handle prescription charges.
- Undertake drug checks and orders at ward level
- Operate the automated pharmacy storage and dispensing system
- Assist in the issuing of prescribed items
- Assist in the maintenance of quality systems in the dispensary including error reporting

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
