Job overview

We have exciting openings in the Diabetes Team at Ipswich Hospital. The Diabetes team is dynamic and forward thinking & have expanded to provide an integrated diabetes service for East Suffolk. The team has won several awards including the Quality in Diabetes Care award on 2 occasions, Uninvant awards in peri-operative care, Service Improvement of the Year Award 2024 & the HSJ award.

Due to maternity leaves within the team, we have two nurse specialist posts available. These be offered at ether Band 6 or Band 7 - this will be dependant on experience. 

You will be based at the Ipswich Hospital Diabetes & Endocrine Centre working as part of this multidisciplinary team, participating in the delivery of integrated diabetes care for people with diabetes across East Suffolk.

These posts will be mainly based in the outpatient setting with close working with our ward based & community based nursing team colleagues.  We offer secondary care services to patients with both Type 1 & complex Type 2 diabetes as well as covering specialist areas of diabetes in pregnancy, diabetes related renal disease & insulin pump therapy.

Main duties of the job

You will act as a recognised clinical expert in all areas of diabetes care and management within the outpatient team.

You will provide expert education and support for adult patients and their carers with regard to all areas of diabetes care and management Trust wide.

You will work as an practitioner within a multidisciplinary team, providing a continuous service for patients diagnosed with all forms of diabetes, providing holistic care, advice and support in both in-patient and out-patient settings.

You will act as mentor and provide expert knowledge and advice, clinical supervision and clinical governance to ensure patient safety.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience in management of patients with diabetes
  • Experience of developing, training and education in clinical practice
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working
  • Completion of diabetes competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Audit and Research experience
  • Understanding of Quality Improvement Methodology

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC registration
  • Evidence of academic pathway towards master’s degree level
  • Recognised Diabetes Qualification
  • Evidence of mentorship
Desirable criteria
  • DESMOND/DAFNE Educator
  • Counselling Course
  • Registered non-medical prescriber

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding Insulin – to have undertaken the e-learning module “safe use of insulin”
