Applications are invited for a full-time, substantive Consultant in Glaucoma to join our dynamic team of Consultants who are committed to providing the very highest standards of care. 

The successful applicant will be the second glaucoma consultant appointed to the hospital. Currently a comprehensive service is offered including all glaucoma surgeries (Trabeculectomy. Baerveldt and Ahmed implants, Istent, presiflow and other micro incision devises) Laser treatments (YAG, SLT and cyclodiode).

Main duties of the job

All consultants in the department have a continuing and individual responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and a general responsibility to provide, in conjunction with their colleagues, an effective Ophthalmology Service to meet the needs of the local population, within the resources available.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work within a larger team comprising of nurses, nurse practioners, optometrist, orthoptists and an Eye care liaison officer.  

The department has an active research programme and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to this, and support ongoing studies.

In developing the glaucoma ophthalmology service the applicant will be expected to work closely with our existing glaucoma consultant. As well as develop nurse practitioners, and specialty optometrists.

The successful applicant is also expected to develop the community services working with Colchester hospital in forming a unified community pathway for glaucoma.

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities

The appointee will be expected to:

  • Take his/her share of the consultant clinical responsibilities within the Department, including managing junior doctors within the Acute Referral department and the continued expansion of the Glaucoma service. The precise allocation of session time will be agreed with consultant colleagues, but it is envisaged that there will be 7 clinical sessions of direct clinical care 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA for professional development and appraisal (10 PA total)
  • Provide cover for colleagues during leave and other authorised absences.
  • Join the consultant on call rota in a two tier on call supporting the registrar who is first on call.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Entry on Specialist Register (or entry expected within 6 months)
  • FRCOphth or Equivalent
  • Ability to offer expert opinion in glaucoma management and offer surgical treatment options including cataract surgery and trabeculectomy
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist services.
  • Experience of managing junior doctors.
Desirable criteria
  • Post CCT Fellowship in Glaucoma and/or ASTO in glaucoma
  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit, special surgery business unit, and working parties as appropriate
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
