JOB TITLE: Bank - Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist (Rotational)
LOCATION: Southend University Hospital,

RESPONSIBLE TO: Temporary Staffing Management Team
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head of Temporary Staffing

Main duties of the job

To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
• The post requires specialist skills in the management of patients with acquired communication disorders and/or dysphagia on the stroke unit or general acute wards.
• The post-holder is required to have experience in working with a wide range of patient types and/or have completed RCSLT Level C dysphagia competencies or equivalent dysphagia training.
• Take specialist interest in at least one defined area of the service or particular patient type: eg Stroke Acute Rehab, Neuro, CogNeuro, Palliative Care etc working without direct supervision.
• Participate in clinical audit, protocol development, objective-setting etc as required by the development of the SALT team.
• Deputise for the Clinical Lead/Band 7 as and when required to do so at meetings etc.
• Supervision takes the form of regular face to face meetings with your supervisor, clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, and team case discussions. Access to advice and support from a more senior SALT is available if required. Clinical work is not routinely evaluated.
• Supervise, educate and assess the performance of Band 5 SALTs and speech and language therapy students.
• Ensure that you work in a manner which helps to further long-term and short-term SALT team goals.

• Comply with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency & Conduct for speech and language therapists.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council
  • Completion of formal dysphagia course, or competency framework
  • Completion of RCSLT NQP competency framework or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 12 months experience work-ing with adults with acquired swallowing and communication disorders
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based assessment tools & therapeutic interventions
  • Ability to construct clear care plans for patient caseload
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with an adult Stroke caseload
  • Good presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Attendance at training events in other SLT specialities
