This is an exciting opportunity to join our exciting and expanding geriatrician team at Southend Hospital. We are looking for a team player who can embrace new ways of working and take an active role in further developing our Older Peoples Service.
Our Geriatric Service is a friendly, dynamic team, working to provide excellent clinical care across the whole spectrum of geriatric conditions. We work close collaboration with our colleagues in Orthopaedics, Surgery, Oncology, General Medicine and Rehabilitation.
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and committed Consultant to join our well-regarded, supportive department to share in delivering and further developing our high quality services in which we are eager to support your professional development and we would expect you to be able to develop subspecialty interests.
Main duties of the job
As our Consultant you will be responsible for the delivery of a dedicated programme of geriatric care, assume responsibility for patients on Elderly Medicine wards with daily review and full consultant ward rounds, regularly pro-actively review of our patients and coordination of care with allied specialties and engage in multi-disciplinary meetings to direct the care of patients.
You will also provide specialist opinions to other hospital specialties as part of frailty liaison service, participate in outpatient clinics supporting the delivery of patient care within Geriatric Medicine in line with national standards and Care Quality Commission requirements, actively participate in developing innovative approach to acute elderly care, develop older peoples acute service pathways, services and Outpatient clinic to facilitate the further development of our Frailty Assessment Unit and actively participate in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications (Essential criteria)
- MBBS or Equivalent
- MRCP
- Entry on Specialist Register for geriatric and general medicine
Experience and Knowledge (Essential criteria)
- Thorough and broad experience in speciality
- Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Research/Audit Experience (Essential criteria)
- Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
Research/Audit Experience (Desirable criteria)
- Recent published clinical research

- Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview

Clinical Experience

- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within the specialty
- Expertise in a subspecialty
- Good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
Management Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit management
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
- Ability to teach clinical skills
