We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Occupational Therapist with 5 years post graduate experience to join our established Critical Care & Respiratory Rehabilitation team.  The post is a full time however, part time or job share would be considered.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced band 6 or current band 7 Occupational therapist, with an interest in developing specialist skills in the critical care setting. The successful candidate with have the opportunity to experience a wide range of complex conditions to enhance clinical experience within neurology and acute medicine specialties.

The team provide support to the Critical Care Unit consisting of a 14 bedded ICU & a 6 bedded HDU and 2 respiratory wards, including a 14 bedded ARCU.  You will manage the clinical caseload on critical care demonstrating advanced clinical reasoning to  assess and formulate intervention and treatment plans, whilst providing clinical supervision and support to Band 5 and 6 Occupational therapists on the respiratory unit.  You will also be actively involved in the early rehab quality improvement project on the critical care unit.

The multidisciplinary team at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is strong and supportive.  The team work in an integrated manner with their physiotherapy colleagues and have positive relationships with the consultants on the unit allowing accurate and effective assessment, treatment and discharge planning of patients.

As an occupational therapist at our organisation you will have access to our Clinical Lead Occupational therapist and practice development occupational therapist in addition to having access to our established in-service training program and support with CPD activities.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership and specialist occupational therapy supporting our home 1st discharge to assess philosophies .  You will manage a clinical caseload, completing assessments, treatment sessions and discharge planning. You will take on joint operational responsibilities with a fellow Band 7 Physiotherapist for the whole team on a daily basis and lead on service development initiatives. You will offer clinical supervision and support to B5 and B6 therapists and therapy assistants.  You will be supported by an 8a Therapy Team Lead.

Good time management and complex discharge planning skills are essential to this post, as well as excellent organisational skills, a flexible approach and an ability to problem solve. It is a fast paced environment, where knowledge of thorough and complex assessments is needed.  Discharge is supported via our local Discharge to Assess team.

The department is a 7 day working service and this post would be included in that with rest days in the following week.  This is underpinned by a competency framework.

For full details about this varied and rewarding role, please see attached job description, but some of the responsibilities include

  • To plan, coordinate and evaluate the Occupational Therapy Service provided on a day-to-day basis.
  • To undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience.
  • To be responsible for supervision, education and assessment of Band 6 Occupational Therapists and to oversee the supervision and education of other more junior, support staff and student Occupational Therapists.
  • To undertake/lead evidence-based audit and research projects to develop and enhance personal and team’s clinical practice within their area; to make recommendations to Clinical Lead/Head of Service for changes to practice by the team; to implement specific changes to practice; to write and/or contribute to service protocols.
  • Undertake comprehensive/ standardised Occupational Therapy assessments addressing occupational performance and skill deficits in the areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure.
  • Manage and accept clinical responsibility for a caseload of patients, demonstrating ability to prioritise and delegate work to assistants when appropriate.
  • Work as an autonomous Occupational Therapist, being aware of the needs of others within the team.
  • Undertake assessments of patient’s home environment and social situation to advise and implement provision of equipment and adaptations to gain maximal independence.
  • Supervise, teach and evaluate junior and senior staff, assistants and students.
  • Communicate effectively through using written, verbal, non-verbal and listening skills.
  • Demonstrate effective and assertive behaviour in confrontational and moderately complex situations.
  • Ensure that Occupational Therapy treatment is based on theoretical knowledge and clinical reasoning skills are used to justify intervention and support own practice in routine situations.
  • Adheres to HCPC regulations and Royal College of Occupational Therapy professional code of conduct.
  • Acts in accordance with Staff Values and Behaviours.
  • Demonstrates CPD though participation in internal and external development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in portfolio.
  • Is aware of and implements Trust and Departmental Policies and Procedures
  • To be responsible for maintaining stock and using equipment and resources in a professional way
  • To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Occupational Therapists standards of practice
