Job overview

There is THREE (3) posts for a consultant paediatrician with a special interest in Endocrine, Oncology and Neonates coming up to join the existing team.

All post holders should be able to provide acute paediatric emergency and ambulatory care and provide Consultant of the week cover on Paediatrics, Neonates and the Paediatrics Assessment unit as well as take on-call in both acute Paediatrics and neonatology (level 1)

Outpatient activities provides an opportunity to further develop special interest and it is expected that the new Consultant will individually and within teams provide services in

Post 1:            Specialist interest in Neonates

Post 2:            Specialist interest in Endocrine

Post 3:            Specialist interest in Oncology

Period:           Fixed term for 12 months with a view to potentially extend

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for 3 WTE Consultant Paediatricians to join the department. The post will be based primarily in the Paediatric Department at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with responsibilities across the Trust.

There is an expectation that the post holders will have an interest, or experience, in Endocrine or Oncology or General Paediatrics. If the successful candidates do not have the relevant experience, they will be supported to develop this role, which will be included in their job plan. There will also be an opportunity for the successful candidates to undertake and develop expertise in other areas as per their clinical interest as above. There is also an opportunity for a paediatrician with special interest in child safeguarding to develop their role and develop into the named doctor soon.

The posts will complement a team of 14 consultants to provide attending and on-call services for General Paediatrics and Level 1 Neonatal Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Weekly Timetable:

The changing nature of the contracting process makes it essential that all consultants have a flexible approach to working arrangements which may include innovative working patterns, including 7-day working in the future. The job plan will be reviewed at regular intervals following the initial appointment.

The job plan (for a full-time contract) will consist of the following (provisional timetable below):

  • Direct Clinical Care:                            8.5 PAs on average per week

(Includes clinical activity, clinical related administrative activity, predictable and unpredictable work)

  • Supporting Professional Activities:   1.5 PAs on average per week

(Includes CPD, audit, teaching and research)

  • Additional payment for on call will be calculated once job plan is finalised.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent professional qualification
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview
Desirable criteria
  • SPIN training is the area of special interest

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.

Teaching Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
  • Ability to teach clinical skills

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, other specialties and support staff
  • Evidence of management experience or training.
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to manage and lead department
