Job overview
There is an exciting opportunity for a consultant paediatrician post with a special interest in Neonates, Endocrine, Haem/Onc or Safeguarding coming up to join the existing team of 13 Consultants.
Applications are invited for three (3) WTE Consultant Paediatricians to join 13 other Acute Paediatricians in the department. The post will be based in the Paediatric Department at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with responsibilities across the Trust.
You should be able to provide acute paediatric emergency and ambulatory care and provide Consultant of the week cover on Paeds and Neonates as well as take on-call in both acute Paediatrics, PAU and Neonatology (level 2). Outpatient activities provides an opportunity to further develop special interest.

Main duties of the job
There is an expectation that you will have an interest, or experience, in Neonates, Endocrine, Haem/Onc or Safeguarding . If the successful candidates do not have the relevant experience, they will be supported to develop this role, which will be included in their job plan.
There will also be an opportunity for the successful candidates to undertake and develop expertise in other areas as per their clinical interest as above.
This post will complement the existing 13 consultants to provide attending and on-call services for General Paediatrics and Level 2 Neonatal Unit.
On call: With this post the on-call commitments will become 1 in 14.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Weekly Timetable:
The changing nature of the contracting process makes it essential that all consultants have a flexible approach to working arrangements which may include innovative working patterns, including 7-day working in the future. The job plan will be reviewed at regular intervals following the initial appointment.
The job plan (for a full-time contract) will consist of the following (provisional timetable below):
- Direct Clinical Care: 8.5 PAs on average per week
(Includes clinical activity, clinical related administrative activity, predictable and unpredictable work)
- Supporting Professional Activities: 1.5 PAs on average per week
(Includes CPD, audit, teaching and research)
- Additional payment for on call will be calculated once job plan is finalised.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
- GMC Registration
- MBBS or equivalent professional qualification
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree, e.g. MSc, MD,PhD in Paediatrics
Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent team player and the ability to work with staff at all levels - evidenced in supporting information
- Ability to take responsibility and show evidence of leadership
- Ability to manage and lead department
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Broad experience in general paediatrics and neonatal intensive care in the UK
- Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team.
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS)

- Specialist interest in Neonates, Endocrine, Haem/Onc or Safeguarding
