Job overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Advanced Podiatry Practitioner to join our multidisciplinary team. This role requires advanced clinical expertise, including diagnostic ultrasound imaging, to support the assessment, diagnosis, and management of musculoskeletal, soft tissue, and vascular conditions of the lower limb.

As a key member of our team, you will:
✅ Undertake advanced podiatric assessments and develop expert treatment plans.
✅ Utilise Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes.
✅ Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide holistic care.
✅ Play an active role in clinical leadership, education, and service development.
✅ Contribute to the training and upskilling of colleagues in POCUS techniques.

Main duties of the job

To work as an autonomous Advanced Practitioner within the MSK Advanced Practitioner Service (MSKAP) performing highly specialist clinical assessments, diagnoses, management planning and evaluation of patients presenting with highly complex clinical needs, usually following failed treatment in core services or where there is diagnostic uncertainty. To perform ultrasound guided procedures where clinically appropriate and with the patients consent and participation, feeding back the outcomes to the patient during the procedure and to other professionals involved in the patients care in the form of a letter/report.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         To undertake clinical triage of patients referred to the service, including triage of Orthopaedic and Pain Services referrals, directing patients to the most appropriate service using criteria based assessment and highly developed specialist knowledge.

·         To undertake advanced clinical assessment of patients using highly specialist clinical knowledge, highly developed physical skills and clinical reasoning of patients with highly complex presentations. 

·         To refer for additional diagnostic tests and investigations in line with Gloucestershire Health Community G-Care guidelines and maintain competency as a referrer.

·         To analyse and reason complex information provided by the patient, referrer or other sources in conjunction with your clinical assessment and diagnostic tests to formulate a clinical diagnosis.  This will require concentration and attention throughout the patients’ appointment and requires the assimilation of different and often conflicting information within a restricted timeframe.

·         In addition, this post will require the use of diagnostic ultrasound where appropriate within the assessment, requiring intense concentration whilst the result is communicated to the patient as the test is performed.  The practitioner will have sole responsibility for performing the test and interpreting and reporting the findings requiring advanced theoretical knowledge of anatomy and pathology.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree/Diploma Podiatry
  • Evidence of diagnostic ultrasound qualification to RCR level 2 – post graduate diploma or equivalent (Level 2 = Diagnostic US with guided procedures and ability to teach guided procedures)
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised Injection Qualification (if not already held, there may be a requirement to complete this once in post depending on service need)
  • Independent non-medical prescribing (INMP) qualification (if not already held, there may be a requirement to complete this once in post depending on service need)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, including assessment and rehabilitation of a wide range of clinical conditions
  • Experience of working as an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner with a proven work history within the NHS
  • A clear understanding of Advanced Practice as a level of practice
  • Experience of working independently as an autonomous practitioner without direct supervision
  • Experience in communicating complex clinical information to patients
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of administering therapeutic joints and soft tissue injections
  • Experience of prescribing appropriate analgesic medication
