Consultant

Join us at an exciting time for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust! We have an ambitious plan for our journey to Outstanding and are looking for aspirational, committed individuals to join us, making a real difference to both staff and patients.

As a former winner of England for excellence award: Tourism destination of the year, the beautiful city of Gloucester and the scenic regency spa town of Cheltenham are fantastic places to work and live.

As a hospital Trust we are currently involved in over 100 clinical trials and studies, whilst also providing acute elective and specialist services to a population of over 620,000.

By joining Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust new colleagues can look forward to a warm welcome and a future full of opportunities and support.

Job overview

The post will be predominantly based at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH), with full participation in cross county activities and service planning.  The post holder will join the team in providing a Diabetes and Endocrine plus General Medical service to the Gloucestershire, assisted by a full Diabetes multi-disciplinary team. They will also be part of the Acute Medical on-call rota (1 in 12 weekends currently and voluntary additional evening post-take rounds).

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to provide a substantive Consultant for the Trust’s Diabetes & Endocrine service. As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements: -

  • To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s services plans
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division or the Trust

Working for our organisation

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Diabetes and Endocrinology team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that has bases at both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital [GRH] and Cheltenham General Hospital [CGH]. This is a replacement post following the retirement of Dr Gray. The post holder will be predominantly based at CGH in terms of out-patient services.

Our in-patient speciality ward (plus general medical in-patients) and junior medical team is currently based on 9b at GRH and is covered by the consultant team on a rotational basis 2 weeks in 10. We provide speciality advice to inpatients at both main sites. We have a Medical Day Unit at CGH who perform a range of endocrine assessments. Antenatal services are based at GRH.

We have a full multidisciplinary diabetes team based on both main sites who also attend community hospital clinics and there are close links with the Community Diabetes Service.

We hope the postholder will be able to take over Dr Gray’s areas of speciality interest (antenatal care, insulin pumps, young adult diabetes plus radioiodine) in addition to general diabetes and endocrinology but there is scope for negotiation with the successful candidate depending on specific interests.

The successful candidate will be expected to liaise closely with the countywide diabetes team but in particular work with Dr Evans in providing inpatient cover for other specialities at CGH.
