Job overview
An exciting opportunity is again being offered for enthusiastic and motivated senior trainees (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS FT. Continuing our successful Chief Registrar Scheme we are looking to appoint Chief Registrars in Medicine/Emergency Medicine/Surgery for 2025/6.
The post will consist of 50% full time equivalent protected time for Chief Registrar work - including quality improvement projects, teaching, leadership and service improvement. The remaining time will be allocated to clinical Emergency Medicine work within the two Emergency Departments.
Within the organisation and gain a unique insight into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as deeper knowledge of NHS structures and stakeholders.
The Chief Registrar will be expected to attend modules delivered as part of the RCP’s bespoke development programme, which will cover, for example, change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing and personal resilience.
This is a fixed-term role for minimum of 12 months. The role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training, experience or pause).
In the first instance, applications must be discussed with your educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD), and permission to apply must be granted by the TPD.
Main duties of the job
Clinically, as an ED senior doctor (ST4+ equivalent), your role will be in the assessment and treatment of the ill and injured patient as well as providing clinical advice to more junior ED clinicians, where appropriate. You will have the opportunity to be lead or part of the Trauma Team within the ED and to be the nominated Resus or Paediatric doctor of the day. You will be expected to lead your colleagues in these areas as well as being an active team member. The clinical experience you gain will be diverse and interesting.
As an employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with and support other clinical, medical, professional, and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

The Emergency Medicine that we practice is extremely varied and educationally stimulating. The experienced gained in this post will stand the post-holder in good stead for any future career plans. Daily, we manage life-threatening medical and vascular emergencies, limb threatening injuries and we are adept in managing the complex needs of older patients. We also are fortunate in that we have clinical exposure to all specialities, including for example Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Gynaecology. The applicant may wish to consider extending their post in order to fulfil an area of particular interest, as a proportion of their working week. Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and a license to practise
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCEM
- Hold a national training number
- Should not already hold a CCT or be within 12 months (ideally not within 18 months) of completion of training on intended start date
- Must have approval of TPD to apply
- Evidence of satisfactory / more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression (ARCP) outcomes
- Should be ST4 or above
Desirable criteria
- ALS/APLS/ATLS or ETC
- Teaching qualification e.g. PGCME
Experience
Essential criteria
- Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge, judgement & prioritise clinical need
- Demonstrate appropriate technical competence & Evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills & judgement
- Previous ACCS EM completion or other accredited route

- Understanding of clinical governance, including the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice
- Evidence of a portfolio of audit / quality improvement projects, including evidence that the audit loop has been closed and patient safety and quality improvement initiatives
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of positive feedback on teaching approaches
- Evidence of active involvement in quality improvement, audit, research or other activity that focuses on patient safety and clinical improvement and innovation
