Locum Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecologist
12 -month fixed term
This locum post is working exclusively within Gloucestershire Hospitals Trusts.
Any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content can be discussed on a personal basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will help provide specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology services, as well as on call in Obstetrics and Gynaecology during the daytime, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students. He/she will be expected to work closely with general practitioners, and Obstetrics staff to provide a seamless service and deliver high quality surgical outcomes within national targets.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements: -
- To ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s services plans
- To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Women and Children Division or the Trust

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department
- To examine and treat patients within the Department as required by clinical demand
- To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
- To remain contactable and available when on duty
- To carry out regular ward rounds in a timely fashion
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCOG
- ATSM in advanced labour ward practice
Desirable criteria
- ATSM in hysteroscopy
- Qualification in teaching and training
- Additional degrees, diplomas or postgraduate thesis relevant to specialty
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical training and experience in Obstetrics and general gynaecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Demonstrate ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary team
- Ability to lead emergency obstetric and gynaecology services in and out of hours
Desirable criteria
- Training in obstetric ultrasound
- Intermediate minimal access gynaecological operating
- Experience in ambulatory gynaecology including outpatient hysteroscopic procedures
- Experience in preterm birth prevention clinics
Research and publications
Essential criteria
- Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
Desirable criteria
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- MD or equivalent
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of delivering multiprofessional simulation training
- Ability to teach clinical and operative skills
Desirable criteria
- Involvement in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates
- Experience of delivering multiprofessional simulation training
Motivation and attitude
Essential criteria
- Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships.
- Enthusiasm for teaching and training of the multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to provide a role model and to inspire and develop junior medical, midwifery and nursing staff.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of the directorate and to balance individual requirements against those of the directorate and the Trust as a whole.
- Evidence of self-motivation and ability to organise own CME and CPD needs.
- To attend outlying hospitals as required and ability to fulfil travelling requirements associated with the post
