Sexual Health and Contraceptive Nurse, Band 6 (22.5 hours a week)

Are you a driven and motivated Registered Band 6 sexual health Nurse who is passionate about providing safe, effective, personalised care to women and families?  If you have a passion for delivery of high-quality service, then we want to hear from you.

A very exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT), as a sexual health nurse in maternity services following the successful pilot of Gloucestershire’s ‘preventing unplanned pregnancy pilot’. The post is for an initial period of two years.

You will be working with the lead Maternity contraceptive specialist midwife to provide an effective and evidenced based service through assessing, planning and implementing contraceptive provision for patients with complex social needs.

 

Main duties of the job

You will Participate and engage in the development of Gloucestershire’s Maternity contraceptive service.

Under the direction of the lead midwife, you will contribute to service development by using quality improvement methodology and act as a role model by applying best practice in motivating staff to drive improvements will use motivational interviewing techniques to access, plan and offer safe contraceptive methods. This will include patients with diverse or complex presentations.  You will be communicating with the multi-disciplinary team to aid effective patient care; this will include daily presence in the clinical area and attending team meetings.

You will be involved in teaching and presenting at local forums.

You will be expected to work county-wide and run satellite clinics.

In order to facilitate the transition into your new role you will be supported by the specialist contraceptive lead midwife and will be given time to consolidate and learn new skills and competencies.

We have several shared decision-making councils, giving all staff a voice within the department.

We recognise that members of our team may experience difficult situations.  To support them, we have, alongside our lead midwives and senior midwifery team, an excellent PMA team.  The PMAs are able to give 1:1 RCS and are also providing forums for midwives and maternity care assistants to discuss issues such as midwifery led care and creating a fair and just culture.  We also have a team of TRiM practitioners who are able to support all staff who have been involved in a situation which may have been traumatic for them.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Contribute to providing an effective and evidenced based service.

- Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to deliver evidence-based service.

- To use motivational interviewing techniques to assess, and plan and offer a range of safe contraceptive options; deliver, evaluate and amend the plan. This will include patients with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies. Working as an autonomous practitioner with access to guidance from specialist sexual health services when necessary.

- To communicate with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to aid effective woman-centred care, this will include taking an active role in team meetings.

- You will be visible and attend the clinical areas daily to mentor and support staff in the accessing and administration of contraception.

- You will be flexible and work at any site in the county of Gloucestershire as required including work in the community.

- Provide support for audit, including data collection and data utilisation, and dissemination of findings.

- Contribute to service development using quality improvement methodology.

- To maintain accurate and contemporaneous records.

- To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and NMC Rules and Standards.

- Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times

- Demonstrate and promote a woman and family centred style of clinical practice.

- To support lead contraceptive midwife in providing training and education to midwifery staff

- Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with lead contraceptive midwife.

- Act as a role model by applying best practice in motivating staff to drive improvements

- To be responsible for the organisation of your own work and ensure effective time management. 

- Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • United Kingdom recognised Degree in Adult Nursing
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
  • DFSRH or equivalent contraception and sexual health qualification
  • Current FSRH LOC qualification
  • Car driver-able to independently travel to work countywide

Experience

  • Experience of working in contraception and sexual health service
