The department is scheduled to review our FBC and haematinics equipment in the coming year. We are currently working towards UKAS accreditation. Haematology in Gloucestershire really is a stimulating place to work.

Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust provides a countywide Haematology and Transfusion services across two major sites at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. Both provide 24/7 service with specialisms rationalised across sites. 

We are one of the largest hospital trusts in the country providing high quality acute elective and specialist care for a population of more than 850,000 people. This incorporates specialist services, including haematological malignancies, for neighbouring counties and we have facilities for autologous stem cell transplantation. We support Clinical Immunology with an Immunology Laboratory within the management structure of Haematology. Overall, the department processes approximately 78,000 requests and 1.5 million tests per annum.

Core hours 08.30-17.00, Early shift 07.00-15.00, Late shifts 13.00-21.00 & 13:30-21:30, Nights 19:15-07:00 & 20.45-08.30. Unsocial hours currently attract an RRP payment as well as A4C enhanced rates.

Applicants must be HCPC registered and hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

Substantial years qualified experience in Haematology & Blood Transfusion in an NHS laboratory setting.

Personal qualities we are looking for include;

 -Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

- Friendly, enthusiastic team player with good demonstrable interpersonal skills.

To work within the Haematology department, rotating around Haematology, Blood Transfusion & Immunology. Full participation in a 24 hour shift pattern is expected to cover two hospital sites.

Candidates who have not completed an IBMS Specialist Diploma, and therefore do not meet the threshold for a Band 6 may be considered for a Band 5 BMS position.

To assist in the provision of a comprehensive continuous 24 hour diagnostic service by performing a wide range of urgent, non-urgent and specialised procedures and investigations in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion specialties. 

This includes the technical and clinical validation of own work and the communication of any confidential urgent/abnormal results thereby facilitating the appropriate diagnosis and effective treatment of patients. 
The post holder is also expected to select, ensure compatibility and issue blood products in a timely and efficient manner (sometimes in life saving situations e.g. trauma and major bleeding). 

It is expected that the post holder will uphold both the IBMS and HCPC Code of Conduct and act as a role model to other staff whilst maintaining fitness to practice in accordance with the HCPC standards.

  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (or alternative acceptable to HCPC)
  • Registered with the HCPC
  • An IBMS Specialist Diploma is essential for Band 6

Experience

  • Substantial years qualified laboratory experience in an NHS Haematology & Blood Transfusion Laboratory
  • Experience of working OOH's as a lone worker
  • Have good working knowledge of Haematology and Blood Transfusion with the ability to make decisions and judgments involving complex scientific and clinical data.

  • Act as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust’s values and behaviours are reinformed throughout their area of practice.
  • Able to supervise non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective service and care delivery.
  • Proficient in the use of Laboratory Information systems and applications.
  • Able to cover the range of shifts and sites in use within the department.
