NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow
Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.
Job overview
We invite candidates to apply for the position of Registrar in Critical Care with an interest in ultrasound (Ultrasound Fellowship). This is a 6-month post (potentially extendable to 12-months), based at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH).
This is an excellent opportunity to learn and develop ultrasound skills alongside experienced trainers in FUSIC Heart, Lung, Abdomen, Vascular, DVT and Haemodynamic modules. Ultrasound training will be tailored to the needs of the successful applicant. There are also opportunities to gain experience in delivering education and training.
The BNHH critical care department has 3 cart-based ultrasound machines, and soon 2 state of the art handhelds (one dedicated to this post-holder), all with network/ archiving/storage capability. The successful applicant will have 1 day per week of protected ‘ultrasound training/practice’ as part of their job contract, and this Fellowship has excellent support from our imaging cardiology team.
Main duties of the job
- Providing daily assessment and management of ICU/HDU patients as directed by the senior clinical team
- Performing invasive procedures, including arterial lines, central venous catheters, chest drains and lumbar punctures, all under supervision until competent
- Attending cardiac arrest, emergency & trauma calls
- Reviewing critical care referrals from the emergency department, theatres and wards, and liaising with admitting teams
- Learning, developing and applying ultrasound skills in critical care
The post holder will work a rota that includes evenings, weekends and nights on-call covering the Critical Care Unit. Night time work will be supported by an anaesthetically trained doctor on-site, as well as dedicated consultant support from home. The working pattern is compliant with the European Working Time Directive. Total direct clinical care hours averaged over 6 weeks will not exceed 48 hours a week.

We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare form of abdominal cancer) and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer.
The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over £500 million a year. As a Foundation Trust, we are directly accountable to our members through the governors.
