Main duties of the job

Wessex Cancer Alliance brings together clinical and managerial leaders from primary care, different hospital trusts and other health and social care organisations, to transform the diagnosis, treatment and care for cancer patients. We are a dynamic core team of about 30 people that lead and inspire innovation and improvement in cancer diagnosis and care for all people in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. 

This is an exciting opportunity to support the rollout of the Dorset Targeted Lung Health Check Programme across the county.

Working alongside Dorset County Hospital and Wessex Cancer Alliance colleagues, the post holder will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the Targeted Lung Health Check programme aligned with the NHS long term plan and Cancer Alliance's strategic objectives. The post holder will need motivational skills, working closely with colleagues at all levels in the organisation, clinical and non-clinical and where appropriate the wider healthcare community and will need experience in influencing behaviour, in often challenging situations. 

Working for our organisation

The WCA team work flexibly and you will be able to blend working from home, and office-based work (Dorset County Hospital), along with the requirement to work on-site with our service delivery providers which is an important part of our approach. 

Specific to this role is the suitability for agile working which is a mixture of on-site and remote working. On-site working will be based at Dorset County Hospital. In addition, we are open to discussing flexibility in the hours that you work. Please talk to us at the interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

General Duties 

  • Provide project management to the Dorset Targeted Lung Health Check Programme.
  • Proactively support the project within and across divisions. The post holder will need to liaise with multi-disciplinary teams to help ensure improvements are monitored, achieved and fully delivered.
  • Using appropriate tools and techniques to support the delivery of project objectives against identified goals. This includes understanding the details of project schemes and their timescales and financial constraints.
  • Monitor the progress of the Targeted Lung Health Check Programme across Dorset. Lead specific areas of the project as required by the Programme Leads.
  •  Appropriately resolve or escalate any issues preventing progress to the Programme Lead.
  • Support the relevant Programme Leads to undertake detailed service evaluation and performance monitoring at various stages of the project and provide information for feedback reports on the project’s success.
  • When required, provide analysis of complex and sometimes conflicting information and datasets.
  • Present the information appropriately to the Programme Lead and members of the project teams to enable them to act.
  • Apply influencing and negotiating skills to discuss both good and poor findings in services. Use these skills to successfully challenge current practice and offer new solutions for working.
  • Empower, support and coach colleagues to undertake transformation from within as part of their ongoing workload and commitment to Targeted Lung Health Checks. UHS.
  • To ensure all service improvement is patient-centred and includes effective techniques and approaches to involve patients and carers specifically
  • Support the TLHC team in delivering the always improving strategy and in achieving its goals.
  • Proactively engage with a wide range of stakeholders to develop common principles and framework of the Dorset Targeted Lung Health Check Programme.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent experience
  • Detailed knowledge and application of a recognised service improvement technique or relevant experience to Masters level or equivalent
  • Evidence of further training/study/leadership courses
  • Proven track record in project management experience
  • Facilitation of multi-professional groups
  • Presenting and communicating to large groups
  • Evidence of leading and implementing change, influencing behaviour, collaborative working with others
  • Evidence of significant structured project management skills and experience
  • Report writing skills and experience
  • A self-starter, able to work with minimal direction. Knows when to take the lead in situations and when to encourage others take lead roles
  • Well-developed influencing skills, able to motivate and empower others
