Band 6

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for a detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse to join the management team at Hamwic House (oncology day unit) as a band 6.

The successful applicant will join the team at Hamwic House which is part of a regional cancer centre providing specialist care for Oncology patients. Hamwic House provides multiple services such as systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT), supportive infusions, blood product infusions, phlebotomy and PICC line insertions to patients aged 25 and above. The unit supports the wider area by providing an outreach service to treat patients closer to home.  This service takes place at Lymington Hospital, with the scope to develop this service further, meeting the NHS England target of treating patients closer to home. The applicant should  have experience in oncology and completed their SACT training.

Working for our organisation

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to.

Due to the nature of this role and service, this role is on-site and the hours are as advertised. Please talk to us at the interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service. UHS employees can access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Hamwic House’s treatment area is open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 8 pm and we are open on Sunday for blood tests and CVAD care. As well as treating patients at UHS we send a team of nurses to Lymington hospital twice a week to offer treatments closer to patients home through an outreach service.

As a band 6 at Hamwic House, your responsibilities will include working as the nurse in charge of the shift. This will include ensuring good flow of the unit, safe staffing, and escalating issues as they arise. This role also includes supporting staff to deliver safe care and to escalate and coordinate care for unwell patients in an inpatient setting.

In supporting band 7 your duties will also include competing audits to ensure a safe environment and clinical quality, and to be proactive in initiating changes to support improvements to the service. You will be involved in supporting band 7 in managing a team of nurses, healthcare assistants and housekeepers by completing yearly appraisals, supporting the training needs of the team, and involvement in management processes.

As well as managerial responsibilities, as a cancer care band 6 you will be expected to carry the cancer care staffing bleep. This will involve supporting the inpatient and outpatient wards by ensuring safe staffing levels and problem-solving issues as they arise.
