Main duties of the job

Applications are opened for the position of Senior Fellow in Thoracic Surgery. It is an opportunity for an immersive experience for senior trainee in minimally invasive thoracic surgery. The appointment is for 12 months.

 You will be working alongside six Consultant Thoracic Surgeons, four Surgical registrars / Fellows supported by nurse case managers, advanced nurse practitioner and nurse specialist. Southampton General Hospital performs over 1400 thoracic procedures per annum. There are nine full day operating lists over six days per week with access to different robotic systems, hybrid and emergency theatres. UHS is the fourth largest lung cancer surgical unit in the UK and has one of the highest proportion of lung cancer resection performed minimal invasively in Britain. The department has a 20 beds dedicated ward with access to level II and III care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

 WHAT YOU’LL DO

 ·         The fellow will be given the opportunity to develop independent practice while working alongside consultant surgeons in preparation for consultant practice.

·         The fellow will work at a senior trainee (ST6-ST8) or post CCT level with a work schedule including independent operating lists (with covering consultant), running lung cancer multidisciplinary team meetings, outpatient clinics and overseeing care of inpatients.

·         The fellow will also undertake 1:5 non-resident on call for thoracic surgery emergencies again with consultant cover.

·         The fellow can expect to supervise and train junior staff including NTNs, trust appointed doctors, senior house officers and allied health professionals within the Thoracic surgery team.

·         The fellow will also be exposed to evolving technologies in thoracic surgery including image-guided procedures and robotics.

·         There are ample opportunities to develop research, management and teaching experience within the role.

 WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  Full GMC Registration with MRCS or equivalent

·         12 months in Thoracic surgery at specialist registrar level

·         Experienced in VATS

·         Perform pleural procedures independently

·         Competent peri-operative care of thoracic emergencies

·         Experience in the thoracic outpatient and MDT environment

·         It is desirable if you able to perform VATS anatomical lung resection independently

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

 Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

 Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) 

Basic Salary -  MT04  £55,329       Basic Salary – MT05             £63,152

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

•               Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training  

•               Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)

•               A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)                 

 Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

 Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Previous or relevant experience

  • 12 months in Thoracic surgery at specialist registrar level
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to perform simple major cases with supervisor unscrubbed
  • Experience in treatment of chest wall trauma
  • Competent peri-operative care of common thoracic emergencies
  • Experience in the thoracic outpatient and MDT environment
