Main duties of the job
The Microbiology and Virology Department at University Hospital Southampton is a regional, supra-regional and national specialist service provider, processing over 750,000 specimens annually. We employ over 90 staff.
We provide a comprehensive 7-day service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology, and parasitology, and we have a well-equipped molecular facility.
You will be required to work shifts on a 24/7 rota system, which includes weekend and bank holiday working, and early/day/late/night shifts.
Minimum 30 hours per week.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Work throughout all of the sections of the department on a rotational basis and the ability to work flexibly as part of the 24/7 rota is essential
- Be responsible as necessary for the efficient day-to-day running of an area in a section of the laboratory
- Be able to rotate through all the different sections in the laboratory
- Supervise and train inexperienced Associate Practitioners or Biomedical Support Worker staff

Aptitudes and skills required
Essential criteria
- Data entry and keyboard skills.
- Ability to work on own initiative and without supervision
- Good literacy skills
- Demonstrate high degree of concentration and attention to detail.
Qualifications / training required
Essential criteria
- GCSE level qualifications, including English language, maths and a science subject or equivalent.
- NVQ 3 leading to Foundation Degree in Health Sciences (or equivalent level of knowledge)
Previous or relevant experience necessary
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience in clinical laboratory.
- Experience with handling electronic data and fluent keyboard skills.
- Experience of setting up and implementing internal processes and procedures.
