Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton NHS foundation trust is looking to appoint two junior clinical fellow posts (ST1-2 level) in spinal surgery and neurosurgery.

 Our department is the only tertiary centre in the region covering acute and elective services with a catchment area of 3 million across south and southwest of England. You will be covering the neurosciences wards including spine and neurosurgery. You will also be expected to perform the on call duties in the neurosciences department. The junior rota is well-supported with experienced nurse practitioners as well as junior doctors. Senior staff including SpRs and consultants are always available and provide close supervision during your rotation. There will be ample educational opportunities including theatre attendance, weekly teaching, monthly morbidity, and mortality meetings as well as clinics and MDTs.

 Our spinal unit is a joint neurosurgery and orthopaedics surgery department. You will encounter patients from all disciplines from spinal tumours, degenerative spine disorders as well as adult deformities and trauma. The neurosurgery unit will also have the following sub-specialities i.e. neuro-oncology, functional, CSF and hydrocephalus as well as neurovascular and skull base.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

 WHAT YOU’LL DO

This post is designed for junior doctors who wish to develop their skills and gain experience of spinal surgery and neurosurgery in a major trauma centre.

·          Review of patients undergoing the appropriate Neurosurgery and spinal surgery pathway

·          Pre-Assessment of elective patients on the day of surgery  

·          Preoperative and postoperative care of neurosurgery and spinal patients on the wards

·          Participation on the on-call rota, including evenings, weekends and night shifts

·          In addition, the appointee can dedicate time on a weekly basis towards research/audit relating to any subspecialty and can assist in the teaching of undergraduate medical student

 WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

 ·         Applicants must have full GMC membership

·         Completion of FY2 competency or equivalent experience or at least 2 years post qualification clinical experience

 ILS or ALS completion certificate

Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

 Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

 Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary -  MT03        £43,923    

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

 Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.  Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise.
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate –BSc (or other intercalated degree) other higher degrees (eg PhD)
  • Undergraduate Awards
  • MRCS or equivalent

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in Neurosurgery

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Desirable criteria
  • ALS
  • ATLS
  • Basic Surgical Skills
