University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

We are excited to advertise a senior clinical fellowship in general paediatric surgery at Southampton Children's Hospital for one year, starting in April 2025. You'll need to have certificate of completion of training in paediatric surgery by the time of employment and will join a team of seven general paediatric surgeons and three paediatric urologists, seven registrars and one research fellow.

We are a large tertiary referral centre with a strong track record of research and publications as well as a well renowned established teaching programme.

Working for our organisation

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do

You'll do one in nine weekends on call as part of the registrar on call rota. On weekdays the on call will be carried out in addition to the registrar on call and with consultant back up in order to provide supported new consultant level experience.  Your job plan will include at least two operative sessions each week, regular clinics, MDTs and teaching sessions as well as regional clinics and regional operating lists.

You’ll have the opportunity to further your management and leadership experience within the department as well as to run the teaching programme which involves laparoscopic and open surgical skills training as well as covering the curriculum in a unique and interesting way.

Furthermore there will be the option to focus on an area of subspecialist interest which will be supported by the paediatric surgical team as well as our adult surgical colleagues.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for someone motivated and enthusiastic with a strong work ethic who is keen to gain further skills before embarking on their consultant career.

You’ll need FRCS (paed surg) and to have completed years ST8.

The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.
