Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Molecular Pathology at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for an Associate Practitioner to join our team on a permanent contract.  The role will be to support the provision of molecular testing in the Wessex region and nationally for a comprehensive range of investigations for haematological disease, MRD, disease associations, lymphoma and solid tumours, including NGS analysis of solid organ tumours.

Our UKAS accredited department is a Local Genomics Laboratory as part of the Wessex, Oxford and West Midlands Genomics Laboratory Hub, one of seven across England.   The laboratory works closely with both Cellular Pathology and Haematology services to enable the provision of molecular diagnostics for the region and nationally. You will be required to work 37.5 hours a week, working flexibly as needed, between 08:00 - 20:00 hrs.  Due to the clinical operational requirements of Molecular Pathology, the post holder will be required to do some late working and be available to work Monday to Friday.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do

The post holder will work in the main laboratory of Molecular Pathology, providing the receipt and preparation of samples and the provision of diagnostic tests.  All training will be provided. This will involve:

•    Receiving and booking in samples ready for DNA and RNA extraction on a wide variety of 
        samples
•    Extracting DNA and RNA and performing QC checks on the samples
•    Performing diagnostic tests as directed and upload results onto the hospital LIMS.
•    Receiving and uploading results from other Trusts.
•    General lab duties to ensure the smooth running of the department.

What we’re looking for

•    Good keyboard skills and a working knowledge of databases and spreadsheets will be a 
        distinct advantage.
•    Candidates should have good communication and interpersonal skills, be highly organised and 
        the ability to work in a team is essential. 
•    Relevant understanding of a molecular laboratory/molecular techniques would be an 
        advantage.
