NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Breast Unit at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Part-time Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon (0.6 WTE), working at both the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. The successful candidate will join an existing team of six breast surgeons, four specialty doctors and five advanced nurse practitioners. The Unit is also supported by specialist registrars and Clinical Nurse Specialists. HHFT has an international reputation for oncoplastic surgery, seeing over 6000 new referrals per annum and treating approximately 500-600 new breast cancers.

The Unit has been research active for many years with numerous publications of original research and longitudinal cohort studies. We have also participated in regional, national and international clinical trials. The Unit is an early adopter of new technology.

HHFT also hosts the North and Mid Hampshire Breast Screening unit, providing Breast Screening for much of the population of Hampshire. Screening assessment is all undertaken at the centre in Winchester. We have moved to entirely digital mammographic equipment and have ultrasound and breast MRI facilities on both sites. The service is supported by four Consultant Breast Radiologists and a team of Consultant Histopathologists. The other members of the team include a Breast Services Manager, Radiographers, Nurses, Physician Associates and Administrative staff.

  • Develop and maintain good working practices within wards and outpatients
  • Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care.
  • Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

The appointee will be expected to participate in and share responsibility with the existing consultants for:

·       The clinical workload of the department and service development

·       Developing and providing services in his/her own area of specialist interest

·       The administrative affairs of the department

·       Research and audit activities. The successful appointee would be expected to become a CI/PI and be mentored if necessary.

  • Support external teaching eg. Masterclasses and observerships.

Working for our organisation

Our vision is to provide outstanding care for every patient. Patient care is at the heart of what we do at our three sites: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire.

Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.

We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare form of abdominal cancer) and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer.

The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over £500 million a year. As a Foundation Trust, we are directly accountable to our members through the governors. The Council of Governors represent the interests of their constituencies and influence the future plans of the Foundation Trust.

Tackling Climate Change: Hampshire Hospitals aims to embed sustainability and net zero carbon principles into the delivery of care across all its services. To find out more, search HHFT Climate Action or [email protected].
