Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine to join our dedicated team at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a comprehensive and forward-thinking service that provides high-quality care to the mid and North Hampshire area.

The successful candidate will join a team of seven Consultants (across the Basingstoke and Winchester sites), supported by a skilled diabetes and endocrinology nursing team. Together, the team delivers an integrated service encompassing:
•    Advanced diabetes technologies, including insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring.
•    Diabetes in pregnancy care.
•    Podiatry and diabetic foot services.
•    Psychological and counselling support for diabetes patients.
•    Youth transition services.
•    Diabetes education programmes.
•    Comprehensive inpatient and community diabetes care.
•    Out-patient general Endocrinology clinics

Main duties of the job

The role is based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and involves the provision of outpatient, inpatient, and community services. The post-holder will play a key role in:
•    Ensuring the delivery of a high-quality, comprehensive Diabetes and Endocrinology service.
•    Leading ongoing service development to meet outpatient targets.
•    Developing and leading in a personal area of clinical interest or expertise.
•    Providing care for inpatients on a General Medicine / Diabetes ward. 
•    Participating in the acute (unselected) medical take rota 

The appointee will be encouraged to contribute to postgraduate education, including training for GPs with an interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The department also participates in:
•    Departmental governance and business meetings.
•    Monthly regional endocrinology and diabetes forums.
•    Morbidity and mortality case review meetings

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP (Paces)
  • Licence to practice and full registration with GMC
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview
  • Advanced Life Support
  • Eligible to work in the UK
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate degree (MSc/PhD)

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • At least 6 months prior UK experience at middle grade / registrar level in one or more a medical specialties
  • Knowledge and experience of NHS
  • Evidence of safe, sound clinical practices
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Medicine experience at Consultant level
  • Demonstrate participation in audit and research
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of service improvement

Clinical Skills & Ability

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement of GMC competency standards of Good Medical Practice including:delivery of good acute clinical care and maintaining good medical practice,
  • good relationships and communication with children, parents, adults and staff
  • good working relationships with colleagues including evidence of good team-working and an understanding of the importance of multidisciplinary working in delivery of patient
  • good teaching and training
  • professional behaviour and probity
  • Ability to work adaptably and manage different clinical areas as part of the on call team under consultant supervision
