Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within in Essex to be part of a new Physical Health Team providing services to people with Severe Mental Illness. HPFT are looking for a Registered Nurse with a passion for improving the physical health and wellbeing of people with mental health difficulties, within the local community.

This post will join a range of new roles within in primary care and will be a core feature of delivering excellent care to people in the local community. Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work alongside primary care under the clinical supervision and oversight of the team leader, service manager, senior service line lead and other nursing professionals.

The primary responsibility for this post is to provide a comprehensive and systematic annual health check to those on the Severe and Enduring Mental illness register (SMI) and provide nursing support and clinical expertise for the physical health team, developing working partnerships with primary care and ensuring best practice within mental health and physical health promotion.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse - mental health/learning disability or general adult
  • Evidence of relevant CPD e.g Mentorship
Desirable criteria
  • 3 Years post qualifying experience

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Car driver (Unless you have a disability as defined by the equality act 2012 which prevents you from driving
  • Physically fit and able to successfully complete a prevention and management of aggression training course, and basic life support.

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassuring skills are required.
  • Keeps accurate and complete records and communication consistent with legislation, policies and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively within a multi-professional team
  • Excellent communicator demonstrates good verbal presentation skills and ability to share knowledge and skills with others.
  • De-escalation in managing verbal aggression or disturbed service users.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Detailed awareness of relevant evidence base relating to physical health in SMI population – The Lester Tool, Doh Improving the physical health of people with mental health problems: Actions for mental health nurses.
  • Experience and skills in management of stressful situations ensuring recognition and support to staff and service users
  • Detailed awareness of legislation and governance relating to mental health – CQC, DoH, MHA, MCA, NHS Long Term Plan, NICE, safeguarding and The Care Act 2014.
  • Knowledge of the stigma and discrimination faced by people with severe mental illness, learning disability and understanding of the impact of wider health inequalities
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in clinic type settings, e.g Clozapine, Depot/LAI or physical health.
  • Experience in supervision of junior staff, ensuring service priorities are met
