Job overview
We are looking to recruit a research assistant for the Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in adults with intellectual disabilities (Trauma-AID) research trial.
This clinical trial is a single-blind randomised control trial of an adapted EMDR protocol for adults with intellectual disabilities who have a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The primary aim of this trial is to determine whether EMDR is clinically and cost effective for symptoms of any PTSD presentation in adults with intellectual disabilities. Secondary aims include validation of a measure of PTSD based on the ICD-11, to determine the effects of EMDR on other mental health problems and quality of life, and to establish the relative cost-effectiveness of EMDR compared with treatment-as-usual (TAU) in the study population.
Main duties of the job
- You will assist in identifying learning disability service users eligible to take part in a range of research projects and to provide information and support for users involved in research projects.
- You will also collect data and contribute to coordinating aspects of research projects. In some projects this may involve the post-holder ensuring that service user’s care and treatment, assessment, follow-up and data collection are coordinated according to the appropriate research protocols.
- You will be involved in close liaison with mental health and social care and primary care services including both psychiatric units and community settings, as well as with appropriate Research & Development Departments and with Clinical Nurse Specialists.
- You will be required to travel extensively across the trust so car use is essential for you to meet the requirements of this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- You will identify service users eligible for research projects and to provide information and support for patients involved in research projects.
- You will be responsible for ensuring service users' treatments, assessment, follow-ups and data collection are co-ordinated according to the appropriate research protocols.
- You will work to maintain appropriate masking, and to report any breaches to the study as per the associated protocol.
- You will maintain close liaison with relevant wards and departments as well as with appropriate Research & Development Departments and with Clinical Nurse Specialists.
- You will collect research data as appropriate.
- You will maintain and ensure that data associated with research projects is kept secure.
- You will liaise with PI’s and other members of research project groups.

Person specification
Knowledge/ Qualifications/ Training
Essential criteria
- Psychology Degree (Hons, 2.1 or above) or equivalent degree in a related discipline.
- Understanding of research methodologies including experimental and qualitative research methodologies
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree (e.g. MSc, PhD)
- Experience of working on funded clinical trials
- Experience of gaining informed consent from those who volunteer to take part in research
Skills and Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with people with mental health problems
- Working within mental health care services and non-statutory services/voluntary agencies
- Ability to analyse complex statistical data using various analysis programs SPSS and Excel
- The ability to communicate complex and sensitive material regarding clients of the team, effectively in team meetings (10+ people)
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with those who have a history of PTSD/Trauma
- Experience of working with people with learning disabilities and/or adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities
- Able to communicate effectively within the multi-disciplinary team environment
