This post is an important part of our ongoing development of medical services at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, offering the successful applicant the opportunity to work closely with the existing Ophthalmologists to provide a high standard of care across the Trust. We are seeking consultants with enthusiasm, commitment and drive to work closely with colleagues throughout the organisation and within the community to help lead the organisation.
This is an excellent opportunity within the Ophthalmology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The Sub-Regional Eye Unit consists of outpatient facilities at three sites; Lister Treatment Centre (LTC), New QEII Hospital and Hertford County Hospital, as well as a theatre complex fully equipped with state of the art equipment for ophthalmic surgery and an Urgent Eye Clinic based at the LTC. The Eye Unit is extremely busy with 6,000 new patients and 21,000 follow-up visits per year. There are well-established specialist clinics in medical retina, paediatrics, glaucoma, oculoplastics and vitreo-retinal surgery as well as a thriving Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme.
Main duties of the job
• Maintenance of high-quality patient centred care
• Shared responsibility for the day-to-day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
• Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
• Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity
• Active participation in continuing medical education

• Ophthalmological examination, investigations and treatment of patients referred from Accident service, General Medical Practitioners and other departments of the hospital.
• Management of outpatient clinics
• Laser clinic sessions
• Intravitreal injection sessions
• Writing letters and communicating with General Medical Practitioners and other medical, nursing and paramedical staff as required
Person specification
Qualifications / Training
Essential criteria
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
- FRC Ophth/MRCP or qualification of an equivalent level
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate academic degree
Previous Experience
Essential criteria
- Broad range of experience in general ophthalmic surgery
- Demonstrate an interest in, commitment to and have broad experience in Ophthalmology.
- Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
- Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
- Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation
