The Cardiology Department has an exciting and varied role for a full-time vacancy for a Medical Secretary / Pathway Navigator.
To provide a comprehensive and efficient secretarial/pathway navigator service to one or more of the service consultants and Registrars. The post holder will work closely with the service consultants, their immediate colleagues, and other administrative and clinical members of the service. This job may involve cross-site working
This is an opportunity to work within the cardiology specialty with a friendly team. Training and comprehensive support is provided.

To deal with telephone enquiries from GPs, patients and staff in a courteous and diplomatic manner to ensure that appropriate messages are passed onto the relevant people in a timely fashion.  To communicate highly sensitive information to patients / consultants.  To ensure and maintain the efficient and effective administration of the cardiology service, cancelling and amending clinic lists following instruction from the clinicians, and ASM/ADM.
Experienced and committed, you will provide an efficient and comprehensive administrative service to the Consultants and multi-disciplinary team. 
The successful applicant will need to have a good general level of education with formal secretarial qualifications or at least two years’ experience of working as a Medical Secretary and possess the essential qualifications outlined in the attached Person Specification.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide an efficient secretarial service to clinicians.
To deal with telephone enquiries from GPs, patients and staff in a courteous and diplomatic manner to ensure that appropriate messages are passed onto the relevant people in a timely fashion.  To communicate  highly sensitive information to patients / consultants.  To ensure and maintain  the efficient and effective administration of the cardiology service, cancelling and amending clinic lists following instruction from the clinicians and ASM/ADM.
This role is a full time post, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 4 GCSEs (C and above) or equivalent
  • knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, eg PowerPoint, Word, Excel and other IT skills acquired through training and practical experience
Desirable criteria
  • RSA Stage 3 typewriting, word processing (or equivalent)
  • AMSPAR

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of good practice and system of work withing secretarial/PA field
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • Understanding of confidentiality/data protection issues
  • Proficient in the use of computer software packages, eg. Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Medical terminology
  • Medical audio typing
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of NHS policies
  • Knowledge of 18 week pathway process
  • Knowledge of Speciality Range of work procedures and practices; base level of theoretical knowledge
  • Knowledge of secretarial or administrative procedures and systems, some of which are non-routine activities such as answering queries, progress chasing, task-related problem solving

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous medical secretarial experience
  • Experience in a similar field
  • Experience in audio typing
  • Knowledge of software programs
  • Significant secretarial experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (with the ability to reach the required standard in medical terminology by the end of a 12 month period)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
