Job overview

We are recruiting a Mechanical Fitter/Plumber working within a small team at Watford General hospital.

Must be able to work unsupervised and may also be required to work at Saint Albans City hospital and Hemel Hempstead Hospital from time to time.

You will be required to work 37.5 hours a week and partake on an out of hours emergency call out rota.

*Must be qualified with City and guilds levels 1, 2 and 3 or the equivalent NVQ qualification and have completed an apprenticeship and have NHS experience or BTEC in Mechanical services, HVAC.*

*With additional benefits such as RRP, overtime, call out and on-call payments, there is earning potential in excess of £40,000*

The role is based at Watford General Hospital, however there may be occasions when the role will be required to travel across the other sites.

Main duties of the job

Carry out planned maintenance and fault find on mechanical plant. Must be city and guilds trained and to have completed a mechanical/plumbing apprenticeship.

Able to work on Air handling units, pumps, motors heating systems and different types of ventilation systems.

Partake in the on-call emergency cover rota. Complete PPM as per HTM compliance. An understanding of Boiler plant would be beneficial.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Working as part of a team in the estates department looking after the Mechanical/Plumbing services. You may be asked from time to time to cover duties on our other sites, such as St Albans City Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and clinics.

You will be required to cover out of hour duties as part of the on-call rota reporting to the on-call manager.

At times you may be required to cover supervisory duties.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • City and guilds levels 1, 2 and 3 or the equivalent NVQ qualification.
  • Have completed an apprenticeship and have NHS experience or Btec in Mechanical services, HVAC.
Desirable criteria
  • City and Guilds.
  • NHS experience.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Asbestos Regulations. COSHH Regulations
  • Key healthcare maintenance/ engineering policy documents (HTMs).
  • General Awareness of: Legionella & Water Management
  • Control of Infections
Desirable criteria
  • Mechanical services including steam, hot & cold water and air conditioning plant.
  • Building Management Systems

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working in a multidisciplined maintenance organisation, preferably within a healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of working without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrable ability at problem solving within a maintenance context.
Desirable criteria
  • Full apprenticeship experience.
  • NHS experience.

Skills and ability

Essential criteria
  • Work un-supervised and abide by the HSE rules.
  • Understand HTM regulations
Desirable criteria
  • Able to work on plumbing and mechanical pipeline fabrication.
  • Supervise the mechanical team when required.
  • Computer skills and the ability to read drawings.
